Yeah, I'm definitely enjoying the groove of the album but the muffled vocals are detracting from my enjoyment of the album at the moment, especially for what's supposed to be such a lyrically poignant album.

Yeah, I was just going to comment on how I can only understand about 2 words on the whole album. But the album's vocal arrangements and musical palette are outstanding, which is the usual for him. Is it "worth" the 14 year wait? Probably not, but I can't really think of any other body of work that is. I'm also glad that, after all this time, the quality of his work didn't majorly suffer and that he didn't put out some wacky s**t like some of his counterparts.

"Really Love" is a stellar track.

They threw the physical copies out QUICK. I see them in the Brooklyn Target for $13.99. Best Buy might have them too but they won't answer the phone and it's not on their website, obv.

This. 5 years ago, I probably would have said "THIS is what we got after a 10 year gap?!" But nothing can live up to the hype at this point. I listened to the album 3x today, and there's such complexity to all the arrangements, it was like a new listening experience each time. People ready to give the album a thumbs down if they don't hear a "Lady" or "Untitled" are not going to like the album. People who liked the general direction of Voodoo should at least warm up to it when they get over the initial "15 YEARS AND IT'S NOT THE GREATEST ALBUM EVER MADE?!!" It's not hook driven or in your face, but it's a pleasant and satisfying listen.

Only on Sugah Daddy and this album is so shaky-groovy.

I was familiar with only a few of his singles and selected tracks from the first two albums, but I just gave this album a listen on Spotify and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I usually need a couple of listens (or more) to truly get into album of this nature. It's a smooth, groovy album. "Really Love" is divine. "Sugah Daddy" is hot. "Another Life" is a gem. The production has an old school vibe, yet it doesn't sound dated. As clichéd as it sounds, this album is a breath of fresh air. It's easily one of the best new releases this year. "Really Love" is an excellent single choice right now. This album will get good word-of-mouth and should continue to sell well into the new year.

Hmmmmmmm... on first listen, I can't say this one is grabbing me. I'm okay with a more jam session-oriented type of album. But there needs to be a dynamic personality at the center to make it work and he seems absent on some of these tracks. And his vocals seem off, like maybe they're a twee bit shot. And I can't understand a single word he's saying on some songs, which is annoying AS F**K. A slurry, mumbling mess. The production is ACE though. Some of the instrumentals are gorgeous. Kinda agree with you. I like Sugah Daddy, Really Love, Back To The Future (Part I and II), Prayers, Betray My Heart, Another Life. But i think Brown Sugar and Voodoo are better.

100k for an R&B album (and a surprise one at that) in the current sales climate is fantastic.

95-100k is the early estimate.
No idea what Brown Sugar debuted with but Voodoo debuted at #1 with 320k; both albums have sold 1.7m to date.
I wonder what came of those sessions he had with Raphael for the album he was supposed to drop on J.

I would have enjoyed this...if I had any idea what he was saying. I dont understand why on an album so lyrically driven and with such strong messages, they chose to muffle the vocals and make the lyrics almost indiscernible.

This seems like it came from nowhere, but then again, it did not...14 years later. I am still a little confused by the Black Messiah title.

5/5 from Slant. The reviews for this album are incredible, especially considering the impossible expectations he had to live up to.
