Lauryn Hill Speaks Out on Relationship with Rohan Marley
Lauryn Hill gave birth to her sixth child, a son called “Baby Boy Marley,” over the weekend. There were various reports questioning the father’s identity. The former Fugees member took to Twitter to address the speculation and defend her right to privacy.
Rohan Marley, the father of Hill’s five previous children, was rumored to have left the singer during her pregnancy for Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana. While some believed he was the father of the sixth child, his tweet suggested otherwise. “I’m forwarding all well wishes to Ms. Hill on the birth of her new son,” he tweeted. “I’m sure she’ll appreciate the love being sent to her RASTAFARI R.M.”
Ms. Hill blasted back at the reports. “Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child,” she wrote. “We have had long periods of separation over the years, but our 5 children together remain a joy to both of us.”

LAURYN HILL Accused of Being a NIGHTMARE Behind the ScenesLauryn Hill would constantly verbally abuse members of her band behind the scenes of her European tour in 2007 ... so says an ex-band member who filed a new lawsuit against the former Fugees singer. Professional guitar player Jay Gore has filed new legal docs in his war with Hill -- in which he claims she stiffed him out of thousands of dollars after playing Hill's tour. In the docs, Gore says Hill was a total monster backstage -- claiming she "exhibited the type of behavior for which she had gained public notoriety which contributed to a hostile work environment." Gore says, "After shows, Hill would demand that the musicians and road support personnel attend meetings where she would engage in a person-by-person critique and berating." He continues, "At one point, Hill made a statement in front of the tour personnel to the effect that 'I can't believe I am paying you fools, you should be paying me.'" Gore says he now wants more than $20k for his troubles. His lawyer, Nicholas Andrea, tells us, "We believe there are other musicians who have been mistreated by Ms. Hill in a similar manner who are reluctant to stand up for their rights and this lawsuit gives them a voice as well.” Calls to Hill's rep have not been returned. www.tmz.com/2011/08/05/lauryn-hill-lawsuit-hostile-work-environment-sued-jay-gore-guitar-player-fugees-european-tour-berating-singer/

Let's take bets! On average, how late will she be to the shows? I say, 2.2 hours late.

Instead of saying the show starts at 9pm, why not just schedule it later? Friends of mine who were kept waiting for hours at her show are no longer fans of hers. /:

Lauryn Hill clears the air on Nicki Minaj controversy. In a statement on her official twitter account, Ms. Lauryn tweeted: No disrespect to Nicki, but I need to clear up an inaccuracy. I was not scheduled to be a special guest on her set at Summer Jam, I was invited by Nas to perform with him. I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs, and walking with integrity. We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music, while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted, or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics. We can do better than this, there is a better way, or else ‘we’ (the proverbial we) find ourselves in danger of being hypocrites!!! Ms. Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill Returns to New YorkSinger is comfortable and confident in one-night-only performancewww.rollingstone.com/music/news/lauryn-hill-returns-to-new-york-20120603#ixzz1wrZNS7cuBy Matthew Trammell June 3, 2012 10:35 AM ET "Once the band is done setting up, we’ll bring Ms. Hill to rock the stage, for real!" the DJ promised Saturday night at New York City’s Highline Ballroom while fading between syrupy reggae cuts. Fans were skeptical – it wasn’t the first time they’d heard that line. "You know what that means," one nearby patron groaned, echoing the sentiments of the crowd. This is the reputation that precedes Lauryn Hill live: after years away from the public eye and a slew of late appearances and chaotic performances, Ms. Hill was well aware that she had to gain back trust. So when she hit the stage, promptly as scheduled, she offered the olive branch: "It’s been a while, it’s been a struggle," she said, choking up beneath a hearty smile to raucous applause. "But we’re pushing through it." The one-night-only performance was billed as a celebration of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the seminal rap/R&B/reggae opus that launched Hill’s solo career and made her a household name. However, it was no oldies show, as she insisted on reinventing her most precious material at every step. When she launched into a dynamic, lover’s rock rendition of "Everything Is Everything," it took fans a moment to acclimate to the up-tempo rhythm, but the song ultimately shined. In recent years, Hill has been criticized for restructuring her classics around rambling funk grooves and unfamiliar melodies, but tonight she and her six-piece band struck a worthwhile balance between new, exciting ideas and old, comfort-food standards. As "Light My Fire" melted into a roaring cover of the Wailers' "Concrete Jungle," Lauryn appeared gleefully matured. Her voice arrived earthy and full, less that of the slick-talking sister from up the block of her early years, and more of a refined, hip-hop soul-mother – fittingly, her children watched Mommy from the balcony, and a few even popped up on stage to kick some prepubescent rhymes. After an extended performance of "To Zion," her firstborn son, for whom the song was written and now well into his teens, flashed a peace sign to the crowd from his seat. Between songs, Ms. Hill addressed her audience like an ex-lover, pleading for one more chance. "This is our love story," she said. "There’s a hostility out there, but we’ve got to protect this love. We’ve got to resurrect it." After a pensive rendition of "Nothing Even Matters" – sans D’Angelo, yet still performed most loyally to its recorded version – she extended the metaphor. "That’s the back and forth," she explained. "It's confusion, but it's always love. Sometimes we want that person to realize their full potential, just like we want to realize our potential. But it's always love." The night wasn’t without a few tense moments. Before dipping into the Fugees back-catalogue to perform "Ready or Not" and "Fu-Gee-La," Hill had a fairly long, microphone-less exchange with a member of the audience. Though it’s unclear what was said, her face was somber and band-members tried to diffuse the situation without letting it sweep attention completely. Earlier, she spotted someone in the crowd and honed in, repeating, "I see you, and I acknowledge you," for several moments. "Sometimes when the elephant walks into the room you pretend you don’t see it, but I see you." Despite these bits, she kept the show in order, cueing her band to the millisecond and EQ-ing levels with the sound engineer mid-performance. She was comfortable and confident on stage, seductively tracing her frame while cooing "You might win some but you just lost me," flawlessly covering Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder, and just nailing those crucial falsettos on "Ex Factor." "Who’s crazy now baby?" she riffed at the song’s end, clutching a black handkerchief to dab sweat and tears. Before her last number, Hill addressed her own elephant in the room: "I had to make sure I was safe and my family was safe. I never abandoned you," she insisted to her supporters. "I was always on my way back. People forget how young I was when I started, and for how many years, non-stop. . . ." The crowd cheered her on, eager to forgive. It was a long-overdue moment of reconciliation: an acknowledgement that the honeymoon phase was long gone, and it was a disservice to the relationship to fixate on past times, no matter how unforgettable they were. "New York City, I love you, and you love me, and we're coming back and doing this thing right," she promised. "Thank you for being there." She closed with the invincible "Doo Wop (That Thing)," reminding us one last time what we already knew: Lauryn is only human.

Singer Lauryn Hill faces federal tax charges By SAMANTHA HENRY | Associated Press
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Five-time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill has been charged with failing to file income tax returns for several years with the IRS, the U.S. Attorney's office in New Jersey announced Thursday.
Hill earned more than $1.6 million during 2005, 2006 and 2007, the three years that she allegedly failed to file returns, federal prosecutors said. Hill's primary source of income is royalties from the recording and film industries, prosecutors said. She also owns and operates four corporations: Creations Music, Inc., Boogie Tours, Inc., L.H. Productions 2001, Inc. and Studio 22, Inc., according to court papers.
A message left early Thursday for her California-based attorney, Nathan J. Hochman, was not immediately returned.
The 37-year-old Hill got her start with The Fugees and began her solo career in 1998 with the critically acclaimed album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."
The album, praised by critics for its incisive lyrics and synthesis of rap and soul, sold 8 million copies. Hill was pronounced the face of "The Hip-Hop Nation," by Time magazine.
She then largely disappeared from public view to raise her six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of famed reggae singer Bob Marley.
Hill lives in South Orange, a suburb just west of Newark, and had attended Columbia High School in Maplewood.
Hill is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate on June 29.

It was reported yesterday that Ms. Lauryn Hill has been charged with three counts of misdemeanor failure to file taxes. These charges were incurred for the years of 2005-2007, during a time in which Ms. Hill had removed herself and her family from society, in order to keep them safe, healthy, and free from danger. In response to these charges, Ms. Hill has issued the following statement: “For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground. I did this in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda. Having put the lives and needs of other people before my own for multiple years, and having made hundreds of millions of dollars for certain institutions, under complex and sometimes severe circumstances, I began to require growth and more equitable treatment, but was met with resistance. I entered into my craft full of optimism (which I still possess), but immediately saw the suppressive force with which the system attempts to maintain it’s control over a given paradigm. I’ve seen people promote addiction, use sabotage, black listing, media bullying and any other coercion technique they could, to prevent artists from knowing their true value, or exercising their full power. These devices of control, no matter how well intentioned (or not), can have a devastating outcome on the lives of people, especially creative types who must grow and exist within a certain environment and according to a certain pace, in order to live and create optimally. I kept my life relatively simple, even after huge successes, but it became increasingly obvious that certain indulgences and privileges were expected to come at the expense of my free soul, free mind, and therefore my health and integrity. So I left a more mainstream and public life, in order to wean both myself, and my family, away from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it. During this critical healing time, there were very few people accessible to me who had not already been seduced or affected by this machine, and therefore who could be trusted to not try and influence or coerce me back into a dynamic of compromise. Individual growth was expected to take place unnaturally, or stagnated outright, subject to marketing and politics. Addressing critical issues like pop culture cannibalism or its manipulation of the young at the expense of everything, was frowned upon and discouraged by limiting funding, or denying it outright. When one has a prolific creative output like I did/do, and is then forced to stop, the effects can be dangerous both emotionally and psychologically, both for the artist and those in need of that resource. It was critically important that I find a suitable pathway within which to exist, without being distorted or economically strong-armed. During this period of crisis, much was said about me, both slanted and inaccurate, by those who had become dependent on my creative force, yet unwilling to fully acknowledge the importance of my contribution, nor compensate me equitably for it. This was done in an effort to smear my public image, in order to directly affect my ability to earn independently of this system. It took a long time to locate and nurture a community of people strong enough to resist the incredibly unhealthy tide, and more importantly see through it. If I had not been able to make contact with, and establish this community, my life, safety and freedom, would have been directly affected as well as the lives, safety and freedom of my family. Failure to create a non toxic, non exploitative environment was not an option. As my potential to work, and therefore earn freely, was being threatened, I did whatever needed to be done in order to insulate my family from the climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism that I was surrounded by. This was absolutely critical while trying to find and establish a new and very necessary community of healthy people, and also heal and detoxify myself and my family while raising my young children. There were no exotic trips, no fleet of cars, just an all out war for safety, integrity, wholeness and health, without mistreatment denial, and/or exploitation. In order to liberate myself from those who found it ok to oppose my wholeness, free speech and integral growth by inflicting different forms of punitive action against it, I used my resources to sustain our safety and survival until I was able to restore my ability to earn outside of it! When artists experience danger and crisis under the effects of this kind of insidious manipulation, everyone easily accepts that there was something either dysfunctional or defective with the artist, rather than look at, and fully examine, the system and its means and policies of exploiting/’doing business’. Not only is this unrealistic, it is very dark in its motivation, conveniently targeting the object of their hero worship by removing any evidence that they ‘needed’ or celebrated this very same resource just years, months or moments before. Since those who believe they need a hero/celebrity outnumber the actual heroes/celebrities, people feel safe and comfortably justified in numbers, committing egregious crimes in the name of the greater social ego. Ironically diminishing their own true hero-celebrity nature in the process. It was this schism and the hypocrisy, violence and social cannibalism it enabled, that I wanted and needed to be freed from, not from art or music, but the suppression/repression and reduction of that art and music to a bottom line alone, without regard for anything else. Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual. I Love making art, I Love making music, these are as natural and necessary for me almost as breathing or talking. To be denied the right to pursue it according to my ability, as well as be properly acknowledged and compensated for it, in an attempt to control, is manipulation directed at my most basic rights! These forms of expression, along with others, effectively comprise my free speech! Defending, preserving, and protecting these rights are critically important, especially in a paradigm where veiled racism, sexism, ageism, nepotism, and deliberate economic control are still blatant realities!!! Learning from the past, insulating friends and family from the influence of external manipulation and corruption, is far more important to me than being misunderstood for a season! I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival. I conveyed all of this when questioned as to why I did not file taxes during this time period. Obviously, the danger I faced was not accepted as reasonable grounds for deferring my tax payments, as authorities, who despite being told all of this, still chose to pursue action against me, as opposed to finding an alternative solution. My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes. This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family. As this, and other areas of issue are resolved and set straight, I am able to get back to doing what I should be doing, the way it should be done. This is part of that process. To those supporters who were told that I abandoned them, that is untrue. I abandoned greed, corruption, and compromise, never you, and never the artistic gifts and abilities that sustained me.” mslaurynhill.tumblr.com/

If anything, that letter convinced me we're not getting an album for a LONG time (if ever). Well I already knew that, but this is the first time I really got that from something she herself said...
