Pop Lifts Summer Radio Ratings October 25, 2004 By Katy Bachman
The rising popularity of Pop Rock acts such as Avril Lavigne and Ashlee Simpson helped Clear Channel’s Contemporary Hit Radio stations in Los Angeles (KIIS-FM), New York (WHTZ-FM), Chicago (WKSC-FM) and San Diego (KHTS-FM).
“We’re seeing pop culture explode like it did when Britney Spears and the Spice Girls first came on the scene,” said Tom Poleman, senior vp of programming for CC, who added the ratings spike wasn’t just a summer fling. Compared to a year ago, WHTZ hit a 7.8 from 6.7 among adults 18-34.

It's cuz KHTS is playing those smash hits from Jesse McCartney, Mis-teeq, Skye Sweetnam, Voice Five, Brooke Hogan, and J. Roman!

Although WHTZ and KIIS have fallen in ranking while I've followed the ratings (I've seen both of those stations finish third and both of them are currently fifth) they are still popular, WKSC has gone up, and KHTS was Number 1 in San Diego for Summer 2004. WNCI Columbus had another season at Number 1. My market, Nassau-Suffolk, is by far the biggest market with two CHR-Pop stations in the top ten with WBLI second and WHTZ sixth.

KIIS's ratings have gone up? I'm surprised; they hardly add any new songs and the DJs are more boring than ever. Maybe they're right that people like hip-hop, since it's about 90% of what they play.

I'm very happy to see that Pop is taking over. I think the first sign of this was this summer, when there were actually multiple pop songs in the Billboard Hot 100's top 10.
I'm very happy to see that Hip-Hop is taking its leave. It sure had a nice run, didn't it?! :)

KIIS-FM did rise to a 4.1, but Ryan Seaccrest fell to #8 from a 7th-place tie in morning drive.
I'm sure CC is happy; they're savings LOTS of money after firing Rick Dees.

Out of curiosity, who has the #1 morning show?
I'm glad that the Ryan show is so low. Rick Dees was far more interesting and funny.
