U2 to work on new album this summer By JAM! Music U2 are plotting a return to the studio this summer to work on the follow-up to 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb."
In an interview conducted last week with the U.K's Guardian newspaper, Bono revealed that he has been writing a number of songs geared for the next disc.
"I've got a lot of songs, oddly enough, from taking piano lessons," he said. "My kid's piano teacher, Dawn, has been teaching me the piano. And every time she gives me a lesson, I write a new song. So next week, when (the band and I) meet up, I have all these songs to play for them. So I'd like to thin out my schedule in terms of the politics and activism and just get lost in the music again - that's what I'm really looking forward to for the summer."
No release date has been announced for the album.
Recently, Bono has put his music career on hold to concentrate on his humanitarian mission in the U.S. and Africa to create global AIDS awareness through his initiative Product RED.

I'm ready for some new stuff.

so we already know the winner of song/record/album of the year of 2008 grammy..rsrs No we don't - they haven't released the tracklistings yet. ;) I'm definitely keeping my eye on this. I thought How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb held up superbly to All That You Can't Leave Behind. They really can't do wrong right now, and I think they're in a tremendous groove. Should be fun to see what they come up with.

There may be no official word on official tracks that will appear on their next record, but we do know these hints: * 1) Bono said that the band will experiment with new ideas inspired by hip-hop music on the next record, after touring with Kanye West. 2) There are some rumored tracks for the next album, some of which are from the HTDAAB recording sessions: * "North Star": A Johnny Cash tribute song.
"Lead Me In The Way I Should Go"
"You Can't Give Away Your Heart"
"Mercy": Said to be a 6 1/2 minute intense epic.* Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Sep 23, 3:28 PM EDT A Lucky Few Get Signed Copies of U2 Book DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) -- So many people showed up at a signing for U2's new book Saturday that organizers had to restrict access to 250 fans who had won tickets through a lottery on the band's official Web site and via competitions on radio stations across Ireland.
All 250 were waiting inside Eason's, Ireland's largest bookstore, when the four bandmates - vocalist Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. - arrived to put their signatures to copies of "U2byU2," a coffee-table book that went on international sale Thursday.
Bono made no formal comments at the private signing, and journalists weren't admitted, although photographers were allowed.
Outside in the rain, police and crash barriers kept about 1,000 fans at bay on O'Connell Street, the major thoroughfare in Dublin. Most celebrities pushing books in Ireland do book signings at Eason's. But this was the first time that organizers decided to issue admissions by lottery to prevent crowd chaos.

I'm surprised 'Mercy' didn't make the HTDAAB cut...it's better then all the songs on that album.

LOL. U2 made $154.2 million in 2005. I doubt Britney ever made that much in a year, even in her peak years.

From billboard.com:
With its monster-selling Vertigo tour complete, U2 is ready to reinvent itself, frontman Bono said during a BBC Radio interview earlier this week. "Our band has certainly reached the end of where we've been at for the last couple of albums," he said. "I want to see what else we can do with it, take it to the next level; I think that's what we've got to do."
Asked by interviewer Jo Whalley if that might mean a move away from rock'n'roll, Bono replied, "We're gonna continue to be a band, but maybe the rock will have to go; maybe the rock has to get a lot harder. But whatever it is, it's not gonna stay where it is."
He went on to reveal he'd like U2 to explore compositions featuring just voice and acoustic guitar. "I would like to do a couple of tunes in that direction, with just a lot of space around the voice," he said. "I'd like to strip things down; that's something I'd be very interested in at the moment."
U2 is expected to get busy in the studio after the New Year, with an eye on releasing a new album before the end of 2007. Bono said casual fans were the target for the recently released compilation "U218 Singles," which also includes two new songs.
"We've never been much of a singles band," he admitted. "But we did it because we have a very young audience coming through, and we wanted to, you know, just be very available for people who want to check us out, you know? We wanted to have something they could check us out very easy on."
