An Interesting New Way to Look at the Chart...

Here's this week's top 40 chart ranked by average audience per spin (audience impressions divided by total spins).  In other words, regardless of how many total spins each song has, #1 is played on stations in urban areas much more frequently than stations in rural areas, while #40 is played on stations in rural areas much more frequently than stations in urban areas.

Notice how far ahead N.O.R.E. and Ryan Cabrera are of every other song, and how far behind Lenny Kravitz and Hoobastank are from every other song.

The chart is predictable with some songs, but surprising with others (i.e.: Ja Rule and Chingy at #36 and #37).

Of course, Z100 has the biggest impact on this chart, since New York is substantially larger than any other market. Also, songs near the bottom are probably more likely to be receiving payola.

Well, all you need to reach #1 on this chart is to get Z100 to play your song just ONCE during the evening or morning peak hour...

Well to get on top of this chart, you just have to give payola to Z100 and KISS in LA as opposed to a bunch of small-market stations. I don't think it truly represents the hits either. "True" at #2? "On The Way Down", maybe.

It definitely doesn't measure the true hits. That wasn't my intention. It just measures which songs are more predominantly played in urban markets compared to rural markets.

The reason payola is more likely at the bottom of the chart is because (I believe) stations in large markets generally use live programming 24 hours a day and don't accept payola.
