"Caught Up" higher than "Confessions Part 2"? Weird!
"Toxic" only #22? ???
And, "Over and Over" seems way too high. It's only that high because of how big a chart hit it is, because Z100 actually added it late and didn't have in heavy rotation til about 2 weeks ago...

Z100 is strange about their year-end countdowns and tries, not very successfully, to adjust for end-of-year hits. Take a look at Lasgo's "Alone". Added on KTU in June of '03 and on Z100 on October 1st of that same year, it landed at #98 on the '03 countdown. Yet, it makes it to #49 this year, having been removed from their playlist the first week in Feb. And #77's Confessions Pt. II, a #1 Billboard hit, was definitely much more popular. Why would someone remember Alone as a member of the top half of the songs of 2004? Whether it's because of a lack of decent dance music on CHR radio (the last time there was significant dance crossover was ~2001) or because the list generated is ranked somewhat according to the opinions of Cubby and the rest of the staff, strange predicaments always crop up with ranking any songs that span two years (Hey Ya..#40 in 03, #24 in 04). The other Z100 Top 100's I've compiled are hosted by Plannine's Top 30 website. The direct link is: www.ct30.com/z100/more.txt

Sasha- Dat Sexy Body higher than Snoops "Drop it like its Hot"? OK, anyways... It should be. The countdown should be based on what the station has been playing. Sasha has been played in medium rotation, but without a stop, since July. Z100 only started playing Snoop a little over a month ago.

Z100's chart always seems strange when first looked at. Like "Slow Jamz" at #99 strikes me as odd, since I would've figured that would've gotten played to heck this year. But I've seen it speculated that the chart is mostly based on listener requests so that could be a reason. Thanks for posting this, by the way. I should try to listen to this online sometime this weekend or next. And thank you, thank you, thank you for that website! It's so exciting to me to see those old year-end chart, especially the ones from 1993-95. I can really see what they mean when they say Z100 was practically an alternative station then. Here are a few songs that stood out to me: Belly - Feed The Tree (#95 1993) Depeche Mode - Walking In My Shoes (#99 1993) Porno For Pyros - Pets (#87 1993) Pearl Jam - Black (#42 1993) Love Spit Love - Am I Wrong (#90 1994) Danzig - Mother (#100 1994) (Danzig!) Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days (#79 1994) Stone Temple Pilots - Vasoline (#29 1994) Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter (#20 1994) Foo Fighters - I'll Stick Around (#91 1995) (Higher than Mariah Carey's "Fantasy"!) White Zombie - More Human Than Human (#80 1995) Hole - Violet (#70 1995) Rancid - Time Bomb (#56 1995) Matthew Sweet - Sick Of Myself (#26 1995) Sponge - Molly/Plowed (#25/#12 1995) I mean, the 1995 chart could pass for a pop-leaning alternative chart if it could. Makes me wish I was more of an alternative music fan when I was 9.

1993-1995 as well as 98 and 00 were the hardest to track down. I can't help but laugh when looking at the 95 countdown: Hurt, by Nine Inch Nails...and then the dance remix of Total Eclipse of the Heart. Good stuff. And even though I do like it, and remember hearing it constantly during my junior year of high school...why was Jumpin Jumpin the #1 song of 2000???
I'm gonna post the 2004 weekly playlists soon, as I've kept track. It's interesting to see that "Yeah" held the #1 spot for only 3 weeks, as compared to the July 4th through Labor Day #1 run of "Turn Me On".

Moonshadow, thanks for posting the link to all the lists. Whoa, they brought back memories from junior high when Z100 was definitely an Alternative station that happened to play TLC once a night. In 1995 for example, the only Non-Alternative song in the Top 20 is the Real McCoy. Of course, most of the rest wouldn't be considered Alternative today, but back then Natalie Merchant and the Goo Goo Dolls WERE Alternative based. Moonshadow, you should stick around and post here a lot more!

I maintain that that chart is inaccurate. I've been an avid listener of Z-100 for over two years now, and this does not match the songs that they have played.

Well, maybe it is somewhat fallible, especially considering that Mario Winans, Beyonce, and Britney all held the #1 spot for a few weeks at some point during the year. Also, there probably isn't a mathematical formula ranking these songs. But in what sense do you mean inaccurate? They did play all of these at some point this year, and you can bet that anything in the Top 10 they played the hell out of. Sure, a few that made the Top 100 countdown could have been replaced with better picks...
Did "Car Wash" make that big a splash? No, it was played for about 3 weeks at the end of August. Songs like Mis-teeq's "Scandalous," or Sarah Connor's "Bounce," or even Mynt's "How Did You Know?" and Angel City's "Love Me Right", all of which held the lower portions of the surveys, could have replaced that lousy pick. And as hot as Lil Jon is, Pitbull's summer track "Culo" should have been buried during Labor Day weekend. Oh, and I forgot about January's monster successful collaboration that everyone was talking about...Nelly and JT's "Work It" (?!). The lack of good dance explains Mad'house's "Like A Prayer" doing so well, a song that went to #83 on KTU's 2002....yes, 2002 countdown.
OK...so while I agree that there could have been better picks, for the most part, the countdown does match.

And that's just the beginning. You don't want me to get started. ;)

Once again, this countdown majorly surprised me, especially "Everytime" above "Toxic" and Hoobastank coming in at only #8. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing that song every other minute... "Yeah" and "My Immortal" were predictable to be 1&2, but after that...

i suspect that there is no formula for this countdown, perse. i think what they do is gather all #1's and give the #1 spot to the one that stayed on top for the longest, give #2 spot for the second song that stayed on top for the longest, etc.
i don't get why people are surprised that 'toxic' is higher than 'everytime'. the first song mentioned is clearly the bigger hit.
it's a pleasant surprise to see kelly with 2 entries. SUBG was released like 2 months ago.
