Oh, f**k that! Pretty much the worst choice they could've gone with for a follow-up single. (Although "Blow" would've been an especially obnoxious choice.) It feels like a forced song experiment coming from them, considering it came 3 months on the heels of The Used's "Paralyzed": *Both songs are the same amount of heaviness. (In Atreyu's case, the distorted guitars are dialed way back.) *Both songs have a pervasive swing rhythm. *Both songs feature horns. *Both albums they come from were produced by John Feldmann. What was wrong with "Doomsday" or my personal favorite, "When Two Are One"? Not "Lose It," either? If they wanted to go with something different, I'd even take the beautiful slide-guitar driven title track. Maybe it's just after hearing "Paralyzed," but "Falling Down" feels a little ingenuine. Making it a single, in theory, makes it worse for me. Watch, though, and if it does decently, I'll probably come around on it.

mistake!
why not Doomsday, or anything, Falling Down and Honor would be my bottom two choices for a single. i dot see this as accessible at all.

This doesn't sound anything like a Atreyu single at all.

I remember really liking this song, but then I liked a lot of songs off of that album. I think "Lose It" was another. I don't really care which single they choose as long as it does well for them, I guess.
And since it seems to be the topic of argument, I usually really like it when bands do something outside of their usual field of expertise, because it keeps things interesting. I don't remember thinking the song sounded forced, just different. But then this whole album really sounded very different from their previous works.

I like the song very much, but it's an experimental sound for them coming from a band who's unestablished at the mainstream level. I want something more representative of their roots to become their hit songs with which to establish themselves.
"Ex's and Oh's" would have been the perfect song for this, but through their falling out with their label I guess it was slept on. I mean, if the Bullet For My Valentine can post back-to-back sleeper hits with longevity by sounding exactly like Atreyu, undoubtedly E&O could have at least done the same. Yet they keep pushing songs like "The Theft" and this new record that fail to give its new audience the right impression of who they are.

(Plus it reminds me so much of The Used's "Paralyzed.")Also, well said. (Although I'd add "a cross between Killswitch Engage and" before "Atreyu" in your BFMV comparison.) I swear, sometimes it's as if your thoughts are formed from a different part of my brain.

Very good single choice. I hope Epic gets the light of day next, but they probably won't go wrong with this one.

Killswitch released "Holy Diver" as a single basically because that song (and Dio) is ironically en vogue again, so there was a lot of fan demand for its official release, aside from its original appearance on a compilation CD of covers that accompanied an issue of Kerrang! magazine in the summer of 2006. "Epic" has little, if any, of that kind of wave of demand surging behind it.

Is Dio in style now? I hadn't noticed.

I'm not sure what Holy Diver has to do with Epic, other than not being an original song. I was just comparing it to the situation one of their peers is in with a cover that's unfortunately turned out to be their biggest radio single. But Killswitch has solid prior success and it's not like "Holy Diver" is a runaway smash that left all their previous singles in the dust, so they don't have to worry about it cursing their career. Is Dio in style now? I hadn't noticed. At first I thought it was just a couple of my friends last year (well, mid-2006 is when I'm talking about). It's ironic-chic factor just seemed to spread like wildfire after that. Hell, just this past Friday night at work, I saw this 16 year-old kid in a Dio t-shirt. They probably sell them at Hot Topic now, or something.

I like this and all, but holy crap Nick you gave the best possible comparison that I can think of. This sounds EXACTLY like something The Used would put out now and nothing at all like what I expected to hear out of Atreyu. Since it's already in the Top 50, I don't think it will totally bomb, but I think it will either go nowhere but up to the top or not do much better than where it is at this point.

Oh yeah, I know. I have the album. That really was the best comparison possible with that song over any others. I think that would be funny if both bands went on tour together and covered each other's songs.

This has a cool AFI-ish vibe to it. Definitely not what I expected from this band, but a very good song. I think it will continue to do well.

As much as this is growing on me, I still find it pretentious and overproduced.

Wow, I cannot believe I heard this on KNDD; to my knowledge, they've never come close to playing an Atreyu song, hitherto. Granted, the fact that it doesn't quite resemble the typical Atreyu song is probably a factor.

Well, there's only been one other song, to this point, that a run-of-the-mill commercial Alternative radio station should have been playing. But now, if they try and release anything that even halfway closely resembles a return to form, they'll probably be fucked.

It sounds like uninspired, generic, cock rock to me. Good to see them having some success though.
