Atreyu's cover of Faith No More's Epic. My god, just so mind-numbingly awful.

Madonna's version of American Pie was IMO a complete massacre of a classic song, and IMO a cheap way to get a hit when she was kinda "between projects"

Whitney's remake of 'I Will Always Love You' was despicable.
DHT's remake of 'Listen To Your Heart' was also terrible; Roxette's Marie Frederiksson is an exceptional singer, and all of their hits were perfect as originally recorded.
Leave it to the totally hopeless Britney Spears to demolish a beyond-legendary rock classic ('Satisfaction ') and the gold standard for hip-hop ('My Prerogative')

DHT's anemic and downright putrid cover of 'Listen To Your Heart' is waaayyyy up there on my list.
Roxette's chart-topping original was a flat-out masterpiece, and Marie Frederikkson gets my vote as the best female vocalist on the radio at that time (1989-mid nineties), at a time when the females at top 40 radio were far better than today's underwhelming contingent of female vocalists, thanks to Taylor Dayne, Mariah, & Whitney, just to name a few.

i like Madonna's "American Pie". Tho the lyrics were cheesy, she turned it into a good pop record. Not amazing, but not bad by any means, either.

Whitney's remake of 'I Will Always Love You' was despicable. But the original was atrocious so despicable is an improvement. This BBC article quotes Celine Dion having the worse cover Celine Dion is responsible for the world's worst cover version, a poll of music experts has decided.news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7468837.stm

Club Noveau's desecration of the 1972 Bill Withers classic 'Lean On Me' is also up there on the 'what the hell were they thinking when they recorded that masterpiece?' list.

The first one to spring to mind upon seeing this thread was Britney's cover of "Satisfaction", although Madonna's "Imagine" is pretty bad too.

Celine has ruined some good songs, unfortunately Her screams in "Alone" and "All By Myself" are too much to handle for me. And "When I Need You" was just average. As I said before, "Endless Love" is one of the worst covers ever too. The excessive melisma of Carey and Vandross turned a beautiful song into a nightmare for my ears. Mariah's take on "Against All Odds" was also a bad cover to a beautiful song. On the other hand, Phil Collins took all of the emotion out of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors". I would add Madonna but her own cover of Love Don't Live Here Anymore for the album "Something to Remember". The original was already a bad cover, but her self-cover was even worst. I DO like "American Pie". In fact, it is one of my favorites of the past 10 years from her. She brought a different Pop vibe and tenderness to the song, plus Rupert's background vocals were pretty good. On the other hand, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" was TOO BIG of a song for Madonna. Still, I could handle the ballad, BUT the remix was on the verge of ridiculous and insuting. I can dance to it and stuff, but that doesn't take the fact to me that is an AWFUL version. Britney can be one of my dearest singers, but still she is a Weapon of Mass Destruction of Classics: "Satisfaction", "I Love Rock'n Roll" were masterpieces turned into garbage! and "My Prerrogative" was a good song turned into mediocre. I won't say it's amongst the worst ever, but to me Whitney Houston tried TOO HARD to showcase her voice and sing like crazy in the last minute of "I Will Always Love You". I am now used to it, but at the beginning I had to run to my stereo and turn the volume down everytime she screamed "And IIIIIIIIeeIIIII" and added all that melisma "YoooUUUUoooUUU". UGH! Took all the simplicity but effective connection to the heart that Dolly Parton brought with her version. Sometimes it is not necessary to take your lungs out to showcase emotion. A simply sung song can be much more effective than a screamed one. And when I hear Dolly singing, I can feel that emotion running through my veins... whereas with Whitney I can feel scare running through my hairs!!! WE can then ask for the Worst Sample Use of Songs... One of the winners for me is "Reach Out" by Hilary Duff. When I heard that, I almost cried :'(
