During the last months I have been hearing many comments about recent or past covers (Wanna Be Starting Something, What Hurts the Most), but which one do you think is the WORST cover you have ever heard??? I can come up with many, even by GREAT artists, but hey everyone has its bad efforts ;)

My own first suggestions: 1. Axel F (Crazy Frog). I cannot stand that song. Quite a horrendous cover of a great 80s song!
2. Don't Cry for Me Argentina - Miami Spanglish Mix (Madonna). Oh, my precious Maddy... WHAT THE HELL were you thinking when you expressly decided to have this shitty version of that classic song?!! >:( The emotion got fully destroyed and it was all a mess. Of course, dancey and all, but shameful
3. The Power of Love (Laura Branigan) As much I like Laura, this was just a destruction of this great love song. She did not have enough voice to pull out a good interpretation of this, so she ended up screaming without voice on this one. Instead of being a smooth, emotional song, it ended up being a painful cover.
4. Endless Love (Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey) The original was so smooth, sweet... Diana and Lionel let their voices flow without oversinging it. But in this cover, both Luther and Mariah could not sing a paragraph without oversinging it or breaking their voices and saying these.... I don't know hot to explain... but if you compare this phrase: "And I, I want to share all my love for you" Diana and Lionel almost said it clearly BUT Mariah and Luther said something like: ANd I-I-I-IaaaaIII I want toooUiUIu shaIieEiree all my love (lo-lo-lo-loooeoeoeeeve!) for youiuioouuuu (yu-yu-yu-yuuuuuuu). Of course, I'm jokingly exaggerating, but it was just an illustration of my point. They both had good voices to do a great cover, but why-oh-why did they have to do that?!
* I remember that in the early 90s there were also many shameful Techno covers of great ballads, which simply took out all of the emotion of those songs... I just don't remember them right now, but they would be quite at the top with the Frog.

The one that always comes to mind to me is 'Big Yellow Taxi' by Counting Crows. And sure, the version with Vanessa Carlton too. It's just a terrible, useless cover. Also, throw in 'Give A Little Bit' by the Goo Goo Dolls. I was thinking about that earlier tonight about how because of their remake, I can't stand the original anymore either.

Any song covered by the High School Musical/Paris Hilton/Hilary Duff set...hearing bad songs by bad singers is one thing, but hearing good songs by 'singers' the cannot sing is depressing.

I can't stand it when opera singers try to cover Pop or r&b songs. They sound so out of their element and their voices lose their magnificence and become small. It's kind of funny actually. Example... www.youtube.com/watch?v=X23tIynbjCQ Liza Minelli and Pavarotti "New York, New York" www.youtube.com/watch?v=btfBQQNk8Q8 Andrea Bocelli covering Elvis's "Can't Help Falling in Love"

Girls Aloud - "I'll Stand By You". Arguably my favorite working group on the planet right now, but this is just dire.

Also, throw in 'Give A Little Bit' by the Goo Goo Dolls. I was thinking about that earlier tonight about how because of their remake, I can't stand the original anymore either. Funny, I much prefer the Goo Goo Dolls' version over Supertramp's. Supertramp's version is a little lacking. Bob Dylan's version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" might not technically be a remake, but I'm still counting it as one. There's no way the original can actually come out that horrendously.

Mika performed "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics live a few months ago. I like his music, but that was just painful. Madonna's take on "American Pie." It was just okay. The original is a classic. * I remember that in the early 90s there were also many shameful Techno covers of great ballads, which simply took out all of the emotion of those songs... I just don't remember them right now, but they would be quite at the top with the Frog. The first one that immediately comes to mind is "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" as covered by Nicki French. I thought her vocals were very faithful to the original, however, it did lose some of the emotion because it was all uptempo. I recall hearing a ballad version of Nicki's and it was more suitable. "Heaven" as covered by DJ Sammy & Yanou featuring Do could be another, but the uptempo production really complemented the vocals and lyrical content. The Candlelight version was the best though. Tainted Love and Personal Jesus by Marilyn Manson definitely rank among my least favorite. wow, I love those two covers by Marilyn :) I'm not much of a Marilyn Manson fan, but I liked those too. Girls Aloud - "I'll Stand By You". Arguably my favorite working group on the planet right now, but this is just dire. Agreed. I preferred Carrie Underwood's recent cover of that.

Orgy's take on "Blue Monday". You don't desecrate the most perfect song ever created with a lot of aimless rawk guitars, a limper-than-limp rhythm section and a "singer" with a Hot Topic Goth Posturing syndrome!

Jessica Simpson: "Angels" and "Take My Breath Away" and "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" ... especially the third.
Céline Dion: "All by Myself" and "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" ... overwrought.
Cher: "Save Up All Your Tears" and "When the Money's Gone" ... a lot of her remakes aren't my thing, but these two are particularly offensive. Don't suit her voice very well in my opinion.
Sixpence None The Richer: "Don't Dream It's Over" ... very blah.
Metallica: "Turn the Page" ... song kinda sucks as it is, but this version is just painful.
Sheryl Crow: "The First Cut Is the Deepest" ... I really like Sheryl Crow, but this was just uninspired.
Mariah Carey: "Without You" and especially "Bringing On the Heartbreak" ... no. Just no.
Limp Bizkit: "Faith" ... gawd. One of the most horrendous things I've ever heard.
Obviously these aren't all the worst, but they're ones I dislike to varying degrees anyway. I'm sure there are many more.
EDIT: Oh, and speaking of Crazy Frog, throw that version of "We Are the Champions" into the mix. Such dreck!
EDIT: I forgot I made this post, but I agree with most of my commentary except for the Sheryl Crow nomination. I do still think that's far from her best work, but in comparison to the others listed, it's really not one of "the worst."

The dance cover of "Heaven" by Bryan Adams...I've never loved a song so much and then hated it when the cover came out Not a big fan of the Ataris' version of "The Boys Of Summer" either Gotta agree with the William Hung thing

"Landslide" by the Dixie Chicks would be my #1 worse ever cover... and this was my opinion on the remake of this Fleetwood Mac classic LONG BEFORE Natalie stuck her foot in her mouth.
As for also rans... I agree the Ataris' "The Boys of Summer" is also HORRID... The current Garth Brooks remake of Huey Lewis' "Workin' For A Livin'" is really bad (and that's with Huey backing up Garth!) I'm also not a fan of DMT's remake of Roxette's "Listen To Your Heart". "Endless Love" by Mariah and the late Luther Vandross is also bad - how could two such amazing vocalists go so wrong? It happened though... Conversely with Mariah, I LOVED her cover of "Without You"... it would cool to make a list of "best covers"... maybe I'll do that one! :)

Haha... I knew more than one was gonna throw out Madonna's American Pie version. I know the original is one of the biggest classics... but do you guys seriously think that Madonna's version is THAT bad? I actually like it, even Rupert's background vocals sound nice... Anyway. Good call 2m. I just remembered tonight Britney's awful remakes. Seriously, those were destruction of classics! At least the rock ones... MP was so-so.
WotuNeed: Agree on almost all of your picks, especially the SCREAMING ones (on different meanings: Celine's ABM and Limp's Faith) and the INSIPID ones... Maybe I would say that Mariah's version, although far from the original, is not as bad as the others. Of course, her take on Def Leppard was... ridiculous.
And to add to the list of missteps from Divas: - Christina Aguilera's version of Besame Mucho. That was a destruction of one of the most romantic Latin ballads ever. She just screamed like an insane!! - Whitney Houston's version of All the Man that I Need, although not horrendously bad, once again opted for ended screaming instead of singing.
Disco Cowboy, about the DANCE remakes... I kind of liked both of your examples. Nikki French still kept some of the emotion of the song despite the techno version... and Heaven, well in that case the emotion was certainly gone, but the arrangement was cool.
In my case, I was referring to Techno of the early 1990s, like for example: Double You's take on "Please Don't Go". I think there was a similar cover of "With or Without You" on those days (92, 93) that was simply an insult. I'll try to remember more or check the info on those remakes...

Rascal Flatts - Life Is A Highway & What Hurts The Most What Hurts The Most (by the Rascal Flatts) is a cover? (Thought that was the original) Also not a big fan of "Listen To Your Heart" by DHT but that Roxette version IMO is even worse cause u can barely understand the words with her thick Swedish (I think) accent Had no idea "Don't Turn Around" by AOB was a cover either

These come to mind, but I'm sure there are more.
Madonna - American Pie (She should have gone with her gut and not done this. With a part of the lyrics gone and the dance direction, this song loses its meaning entirely.)
Goldfrapp - Yes Sir (This could have been quite good, but it just goes nowhere.)
Dixie Chicks - Landslide (No...just no. If Stevie isn't singing it...it's nothing.)
Kylie Minogue - Celebration
Nikki French - Total Eclipse of The Heart
Britney Spears - Satisfaction, Rock n' Roll, My Prerogative

That one's ok in its own right, but it still doesn't compare with the original (imo, at least).

Rascal Flatts - Life Is A Highway & What Hurts The Most What Hurts The Most (by the Rascal Flatts) is a cover? (Thought that was the original) The original version (or at the least the first one that was properly released) was by Jo from S Club 7.

New Found Glory-I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing. You cannot take a classic ballad and turn it into a heavy metal song.
