What does it mean when a song goes Gold? Gold and Platinum are certifications based on sales (actually based on shipment) of the actual single. In the U.S. gold is based on shipment of 500,000 units and platinum is based on shipment of 1 mill. units. but it rarely happens these days for singles to go gold (very rare for platinum). i think the Idols are the only ones that get those certifications anymore.

I think s/he means on radio...in that case, a song goes gold several years after going recurrent. It seems pretty random though, b/c there are some Golds that came out the same time as songs that are still considered reccurents...

It seems pretty random though, b/c there are some Golds that came out the same time as songs that are still considered recurrents... And how about this example: "Too Bad" reached Gold status before "How You Remind Me" did.
