Wax Simulacra is the official first single. It apparently replaced Goliath which was going to be the first single that the label wanted. The band apparently didnt like that idea. It doesnt look like this is going to get the single treatment, its also over 7 minutes long. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath_%28song%29

As kick-ass of a single this would be, I don't see it happening. I can't see why they don't just release all 7 minutes as a single. It's not as if any of their songs nowdays become decent-sized hits anyway.

Doesn't really matter, new CD sucks anyway. I liked the Mars Volta better when they knew how to write a song.

Sorry, my source was the Promo Only Modern CD I got in the mail for April. The edit clocks in at 4:09 and is pretty flawless. I have yet to hear Goliath on the radio yet, sadly. Gotcha. The thing that everyone else downloads. I listened to the edit, and it's good until the end. It completely removed the climax of the song.

I couldn't afford Amputechture when it came out (and the cover is so badass I want the real thing), and though I've downloaded it recently, it's only to familiarize myself before they come to town next month. That being the case, I didn't want to get the new one yet, either, though I've downloaded it as well, just so I can be familiar with it. I've only seen really good reviews for the new record (all saying it's more focused and better than Amputechture), so it's interesting to hear you say it sucks.

Cause Pitchfork says the album sucks too. Not that I ever take Pitchfork all that seriously, but in this case they really have a point. What I liked about De-Loused and Frances is that despite some areas where the band obviously went off their rocker in the name of exploration, their songs still at least managed to keep a somewhat recognizable formula as far as song structure goes, and still managed to keep some kind of a hook in their songs. I think songs like "Inertiatic ESP", "Cicatriz ESP", "Cassandra Gemini", and "L'Via L'Viaquez" are very catchy and hummable in addition to sounding all over the map musically. It was progressive rock but still within a certain guided line, if that makes any sense. Then came Amputechture. I tried so hard to get into that album, but that became the point for me when the Mars Volta decided that they didn't need a road map for their song structures either, and just started filtering out whatever collection of wacky progressive ideas they could get into their head to create "music". There's no one track on Amputechture that stands out to me. In fact, they really all just seem to gel into one another, and it's really hard for me to tell whether one song's ended or not just because they change direction so much that the same song can sound like three different songs, and none of them can still be memorable. I hoped the extra time spent on Bedlam would change this, but it seems not.

"Viscera Eyes" is pretty much the only song I can remember off of Amputechture.
I think "Wax Simulacra", "Goliath" and "Askepios" are catchy as well.

"Viscera Eyes" is pretty much the only song I can remember off of Amputechture. Same here. I had to delete the rest of the quote though because after I listened to "Wax Simulacra", it just sounded to me like more of the same of what I didn't care about from Amputecture. That really tempered my enthusiasm for both their latest album (I still do not own a copy) and their tour that's stopping in Detroit and Cleveland. Maybe the single is just an aberration and that the new record is good, but I am not down with the $36 ticket face value for a tour supporting an album I might not be able to get into, following up an album I failed to get into. I would have loved a headlining tour supporting Frances, but they were stuck doing that thing with System and that just never happened. That seemed like such a gnarly tour combo, but it certainly didn't end up doing TMV any good.

No, not quite the same thing. This is the actual CD, not a poor quality rip than any freeloader can get. But hey, some people still enjoy watching TV that is not high definition. So it may be close. I do agree the edit is not perfect. But they couldn't do much else with this song to get the serious airplay they want. I hope it scores well. I don't know what you're referring to with this post, but I'd just like to point out that the difference between a rip of a song and the actual CD version doesn't really matter much when the song itself is a waste of time. Just like how watching a crappy show in high definition doesn't make it any better.

I think you figured it out. I was referring to the quality of the recording, not the actual song. But in this case it's a pretty strong single in my opinion, despite the edit. The downloads actually come at a pretty good quality, something like 210kbps. It's not bad enough that I would demand to listen to the CD.

I've never been able to tell the difference between a VBR file and a CD. I'm sure some people can, or at least think they can to the point where they're hallucinating a difference.

But if you can't tell a difference why would you then feel "there's no going back"? I mean, I'd just assume you wouldn't give two shits one way or the other.

I'm a so-called music fan, and I can't tell the difference, unless we're talking a crappy 128kbps file that sounds like shit to anyone with an ear.
