Two more FREE FM stations died today... ...in the continuation of the biggest flop of a radio format in recent history, CBS Radio continues to flip the format on various "FREE FM" branded stations around the country.
After flipping 106.9 FREE FM in San Francisco to 106.9 KFRC (oldies) and 92.3 FREE FM here in NYC back to 92.3 K-Rock... we can add two more to that list -
101.5 FREE FM (Phoenix) flips to rap and hip-hop as 101.5 JamZ 103.7 FREE FM (San Diego) flips to Hot AC as Sophie @ 103.7mikesingh.us/101.5 doesn't seem to know what to do. They were alternative for many years; then they tried a modern AC format that I really liked, but the ratings just weren't there I guess. Then they flipped back to alternative, and last year they switched to "Free FM" with the talk shows of Tom Leykis and others. Now they're trying a hip-hop format - as if Phoenix really needs another (c)rap station!!! >:( We already have at least 3 that spin this garbage. If Free FM wasn't working in Phoenix, they best thing they could've done was copy San Diego - switch to an alternative-leaning Hot AC. I've read some comments about San Diego's new "Sophie", and most opinions are pretty favorable. Phoenix desperately needs some competition with Mix 96.9; and there isn't a better station that could've done this than 101.5 - a former alternative outlet that could easily combine some lighter alternative with Hot AC material - like "Sophie" is doing! I think 101.5 has shot itself in the foot with this change.
