I'm a huge rock fan but I rarely post in this forum so I'm not really an expert on it. ;) I was skimming through the thread here recently and thought I read something that some stations switched from the Alternative format to Active. This seems very evident by the huge loss of spins on Alternative. (It seems like a couple weeks ago the Foo had 2000 spins.) Anyway, I didn't know whether that was a purely a business move or if it had to do with changing trends. I always thought that Alternative was a better gauge of what was popular in rock music because of all the metal on Active. (I don't think of metal as being very mainstream at all.) I guess I was just wondering which format all of you think represents today's rock music better? :)

That's a pretty daft question to ask since metal is rock too. Obviously then Alternative is the better representation since it tends to include most Active Rock bands as well as punk, indie, and any soft rock that doesn't get stuck on Adult Contemporary. It has a little bit of everything.

Both of them are playing what's supposedly popular, but neither gives a valid impression of the state of rock music in general, and it has been like that for about 15 years now. That's not to say that either format showed the whole picture back then, but at least they added something new to the mix every once in a while (seattle bands , rap/funk-metal, neo-thrash, pop-punk and even some electronic stuff).
