Sara Bareilles' album came out last July and was submitted last year for Best Pop Vocal Album so that eliminates her chances of getting nominated in that category along with Best New Artist and Album of the Year. I think her best shot at a nomination will be for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and maybe ROTY/SOTY if voters remember it. You are correct about the album of the year nominations, however Best New Artist has a different criteria. It is based on "a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist". This is a breakthrough artist award, and is not based on release date for the album. For example, Maroon 5 won the Best Bew Artist Award in 2005 despite the fact that Songs About Jane was originally released in 2002. Their breakthrough occurred in 2003/2004, which was the eligibility period for the BNA. In this instance, Love Song was released in December 2007 and that song established the public identity of Sara Bareilles, which is within the eligibility period for next years Grammys for Best New Artist.

I really don't think Mariah will be nominated for any of the major categories (RY, SY, AY). We'll see though. Alicia Keys will be nominated in all of those categories though. Yes, as of now it just doesn't look to be Mariah's year. As of now I don't see any wins for her actually, maybe a few noms. Janet will likely face stiff competish from Madonna & Justin for Best Shortform Video. Madonna's nomination for Best POP Vocal album is all but guaranteed. UK darling Leona Lewis should be a slam dunk for BSA if she keeps up her sales, as her predecessor Mariah was in 1991. Last year I correctly called Ne-Yo's surprise win for Best Cont R&B album in July and now I'm pushing toward peer Chris Brown--especially if he makes a splash with the re-release, and of course Usher. That is if Ashanti, this category's first recipient, fails to go big with her comeback. I can't see Mariah winning this one again either.

Keyshia cole should win one this year, probably with her smash "I Remember." Her vocal is amazing and fresh enough to win over Grammy's heart. To be frank, I am somewhat upset it has been almost always Alicia's game when it comes down to R&B Vocal Category.
Keyshia Cole all the way for 2008!

LYNSMA, Alicia Keys 2. I Remember/Heaven Sent, Keyshia Cole 3. The Way That I Love You, Ashanti 4. Slot reserved for MJB 5. Possible slot for Beyonce if a ballad is released before cutoff. Bye, Bye may go POP.

Prospective nomination nods for Pop/Rock category.
Feels Like Tonight - Daughtry (it will be amazing if they can make it to grammys two years in a row) It's Not My Time - 3 Doors Down (great Pop/Rock crossover hit) Soulmate - Natasha Bedingfield (I heard it will be released sometime during summer 2008) Sweetest Girl - Wyclef Jeans (this track meets the eligibilty period, right?) Apologize - OneRepublic (so far, it can anticipate a better chance of winning any grammy than any other single they released OR will release until September 2008) No Air - Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown (despite the blatant commercial aspect of this single, No Air still deserves at least one major award for two youngsters' awesome vocal collab)
Personally, I don't see a bright future for Mariah Carey next year award-wise.

TMB will be ignored by the academy. I Stay In Love is Mariah's Grammy song. That song will get tons of nominations.

Who big is releasing up until nomination time?
Madonna today, Usher and Coldplay stand out - Ashanti has been mentioned, Dido's third album must be due soon. Nelly's due a release.
As I Am will get nods for Alicia as checking the 2008 nominations only No One was eligible. What surprised me was absence of Rihanna's Umbrella from any of the nominations.

Ashanti? Vocal nomination? LOL Foolish was also nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal and was considered the frontrunner, being the biggest hit of the line-up, until Grammy fave MJB surprised for He Think He Don't Know.

Leona would definitely get a BNA nod and maybe Pop Vocal and ROTY for Bleeding Love. I don't see Jordin getting a nod for BNA but I can see No Air getting a nod for something. Is Duffy eligible for BNA? She might have a shot especially if she gets at least half of the hype and acclaim that Amy got.
I think/hope Carrie would get some nods at the Country categories.

Leona and Jordin occupy almost the same commercial space and the Grammies rarely nominate similar artists in the category, not to mention that they're both talent show winners. There will be a rock entry and a country entry for sure (OneRepublic and Lady Antebellum, probably). Throw in a singer/songwriter and a mainstream r&b/pop act, plus a WTF choice of an artist no one has heard of or actually put out their first major label record six years ago.

I think that if Just a Dream is released in the fall (Carrie's "ballad"), it will probably land a song of the year nomination. If it isnt released, I expect Last Name to do its thing

The new you-oughta-know artist on VH1 is Justin Nozuka - soul/blues singer-songwriter. He could potentially get nominate in BNA/Pop Male Vocal/Pop Album etc if he catches on- he's super talented!

Mariah: what she should submit and chances of gettin nominated/winning
As for the Grammys this year, she's got to go up against Alicia in the R&B categories. That won't be easy. "Side Effects" gives her a chance of winning some of the writing categories in R&B. That could get Rap/Sung collabo, and probably take it. Pop categories should be "Bye Bye" because nobody is going to beat Leona Lewis in that category this year. So they should put that piece of crap up against something she'll have no shot at winning anyway. And if they do release "I Stay in Love" aas a single, it should be in the R&B categories. She gives a great performance in that song, similar to WBT in the emotion she conveys. She could win with that for R&B female vocal. I assume they'll enter the album into the Contemporary R&B category like they did with Mimi. For traditional R&B vocal, they should put "I Wish You Well" in there.
So here are, I think, her potential Grammy nominations for E=MC2 Rap/Sung Collabo - SE
R&B Female vocal - ISIL
R&B song - SE or ISIL, depends which song is a bigger hit, assuming they both get released. If SE doesn't get released, it should be ISIL
Pop vocal - Bye Bye, hell, even TMB would be better, but they'll probably send Bye Bye there.
Contemporary R&B album. She'll likely grab a nomination for this, no matter what, but she'll be up against Alicia most likely.
Traditional R&B vocal - I Wish You Well
Song and Record of the Year - shuold be SE if it gets released and is a hit. ISIL if not. Coming from R&B, she'll be a longshot anyway, but I think SE would stand an outside chance at Record of the Year.
Album of the year- Who knows. She'll have to carry come kind of sales momentum, most likely, into the fall and Christmas to be condsidered.
Wow, that was long. Feel free to add or critique. What can I say, I have some free time on my hands.
