One thing that annoys me about Rick Dees countdown is that he rarely announces last weeks position for the songs (as I am listening to him right now from 1991). That's why in the past I always preferred listening to Casey Kasem over Rick.

That's why in the past I always preferred listening to Casey Kasem over Rick. I think he did a lot more of that in the 80's, and gradually reduced it by the 90's, particularly with droppers. In more recent years, he won't say how far a song has dropped if it's more than a few positions.

But it's really good to hear these old countdowns.

I thought it was funny when Rick mentioned that Neneh Cherry had a brother named Eagle Eye. This was about 9 years before he'd hit the chart.
But what was all that about Meryl Streep playing Evita in a movie? I thought Madonna had that role.

But what was all that about Meryl Streep playing Evita in a movie? I thought Madonna had that role. Well, the Evita movie had been on the works a lot of years before it was finally released. Meryl Streep was one of the actresses among an awful lot of them who showed interest on the part. And at some point, she actually got it. But then, due to some undisclosed reason, production got canned. Then Madonna lobbied hard for the part, competing with, among others, Michelle Pfeiffer. And Pfeiffer actually almost got it, until Alan Parker decided he wanted to shoot the movie on location, a condition she didn't want to fulfill, for Pfeiffer wanted it to be filmed on studio. And that's where Madonna comes in, and takes the part.

Even though the did another week from 1989, I wasn't disappointed. There's a lot of great music. I especially enjoyed "Rooms On Fire."

1989 is my Fav year for music in the 80s. I dont know if the fact that I graduated HighSchool that year has anything to do w/ it or not. The few CT40 & WT40 shows I have from 89.......almost every song on them I like. Second fav year would be '87.

Anyhoo, this weekend (July 26-27) Rick went back to 1988 and 1999. The '99 show was a special.

Yeah, the 90's version was one of his pointless all-request specials that pretty much has the same songs you'd hear in a normal countdown, just in a different order.

This weekend's shows were 1986 and 1992. Rick skipped over "Hold On My Heart." How often do you get to hear "The Way I Feel" by Tag?

I don't think I even heard that song when it was charting in 1992. Another lost hit was Stacy Earl's "Slowly".
I think they chose 1992 because of the record-setting 10-1 jump of This Used To Be My Playground.

My local station didn't play several of the hits from that week: Slowly, The Way I Feel, Warm It Up (Rick said, "let the air out of the balloon"), Keep On Walkin', I Miss You. Loved the #1 intro! If I remember correctly, Casey's #1 story was about the biggest jump to #1 since The Beatles.

I was surprised at how sexual all the jokes were in the 1985. They were all about breasts and climaxing.

The 90's version this week was from 1997... a great year in Pop music if ever one was.
I liked hearing the lost dance hits in the first hour:
DJ Company "Rhythm Of Love" Gina G "Gimme Some Love" Mr. President "Coco Jambo"
Where else are you ever going to hear those? I don't think XM 90's on 9 even plays them in regular rotation.

Yeah, the 1997 show was great.
This weekend, we heard 1987 and 1993. The '87 show was a lot of fun. The '93 show unfortunately was a "Summer Special."

I recorded 1993 last week and was quite disappointed when it was a summer special.
This week is 1998. Not quite as many oh-wows as 1997, but still decent. Interesting that Savage Garden's "To The Moon And Back" was on this week's chart from 1998, and also the chart two weeks ago from 1997. As chartwatchers know, this song was released as the follow-up to their debut single, "I Want You", and semi-flopped. Then after "Truly Madly Deeply" became a big hit, "To The Moon And Back" got a re-release and semi-flopped again.

This weekend was 1989 and 1990, two good years for music.
The 1990 show sure brought back memories for me. It was the very same weekend I started college and moved into the dorms. Although I didn't hear this show the first time around, I did hear that same chart on "Casey's Top 40" that weekend as I was leaving home. Song #40 was "This Is The Right Time" by Lisa Stansfield and #1 was "If Wishes Came True."

Kevin Dees was on the 1989 show talking to his dad on the phone. I didn't recognize his voice at all.

They replayed the 1990 show from last week.
The 80s show was 1986. And yes, Rick said "Double" instead of doo-BLAY (the act who sings "The Captain of Her Heart.")

The 1992 one was a Top Songs of Summer special from Labor Day weekend. It was mostly stuff from 1988-1992 before I got sick of it and turned it off.

This past weekends shows were 1986 and 1993. Glad they weren't specials.

This weekend's show was from 1987 and for some reason, Rick sounded really echoey. Not sure what happened when they taped that week.

I enjoyed both shows this past weekend. 1988 (when Casey's version of AT40 was no longer around) and 1999 (lots of great hits like, "I Wanna Love You Forever," "Waiting For Tonight," "Angels Would Fall," "What's My Age Again" and "You Drive Me Crazy").

This weekend's shows were 1988 and 1998.
When 1988 came on, I was thinking, "Darn, this is too early for 'Orinoco Flow'." But at one point in the show, he recapped the BBC Top 5 and #1 was "Orinoco Flow" and he played a drop of it :)

Guess I'll have to make sure I get up early on Sundays, but at least I'm not living on the west coast anymore. Are they any other times they play the 90's shows?
I will say it'll be cool to hear the episodes from '98 and '99 since I remember when WPLJ carried Dees in the late 90's and early 00's and waking up to it on Saturday mornings. I don't think I actually got a chance to listen to most or all of a full episode, but this was probably my first exposure to any top 40 countdown show.

Dees has now come full circle (well, sort of). He's rejoined the ABC Radio Network that he was a part of from 1994 till sometime in the late 90's or early 00's, when he joined Premiere.

Guess that means WPLJ will be taking a second run with Dees. If it means getting rid of that worthless Saturday edition of Scott & Todd in the Morning, all the better.
Do they not air episodes during Christmas weekends? 80s on 8 wasn't playing any when I checked in this morning. I understand if they don't want to or can't play the year-end countdowns, but surely they could find other December episodes from the 80s.
