73 BECK Chemtrails 2008 Interscope 79 0 79 0.401 From Beck's upcoming album Modern Guilt. Already getting spins at Alternative and was made available through Beck's myspace and webpage on May 19th. The clip on myspace is short... www.myspace.com/beckNo adds date is set as yet but considering its already busting out some spins I think its fair to say it will sometime soon. Its pretty subdued but would fit along side a Death Cab spin.

Is it better than the first single off his last album, whatever that song was called? I remember it sorta sucking, and REALLY tanking...especially when it's Beck who should be able to pull top 10 on alternative any time he releases a good single.

To be honest I havent loved Beck for a really long time. If I were honest about saying what I thought of this single, I'd say, its okay, nothing great. Could grow on you after some listens but probably wont go top 10. In fact I'd be surprised to see it go top 30 but who knows. Stranger things have happened.

This is not the single, as it is stated in the news section at www.beck.com/, and I'm glad it isn't actually: I like it, but as Automatic says, I can't see it do well.

I just saw it make the jump in spins, I guess some radio decided Beck is still worth any new song to throw out there. What I can never figure out, and someone explain to me, is if it NOT a single and the album is not out, how is radio getting a hold of it and playing it. Does the record company just send it to radio , say its NOT a single but play it for promotion?? I've never bothered to fully understand the record industry in that way.

Maybe they have insiders at the labels that leak the songs to them. Or maybe, they rip the songs themselves to play them: when a radio rip of Madonna's "4 Minutes" leaked a couple of months ago, it got some early airplay although it wasn't officially released. BTW, here's the full "Chemtrails": www.imeem.com/beck/music/9NEqqz_5/beck_chemtrails

Am I the only person that finds Beck's post-Midnite Vultures music incredibly dull?
I am not looking forward to listening to this single. Being experimental does not equal being genius or being interesting.

Being experimental does not equal being genius or being interesting. I'm with ya. I haven't been too impressed with anything from Beck since the Odelay days. This song to me has absolutely nothing to it. It was actually difficult to force myself to listen to the entire thing.

Beck is one of those artists where I like the odd song but I don't think I could listen to one of his albums all the way through.

Odelay especially, and Mellow Gold will always be totally awesome records, but for my money, I prefer the more DIY, experimental Beck, pre-fame, over almost everything he's put out since 1996. His songs really aren't that memorable anymore for whatever reason.
