Good choice but, a 3-year old song as the first single? Seriously?

Yeah, exactly. I would've thought they'd want to put out a new song as the first single and leave that remake on there as a gift. Seems kind of a waste.

My first thought is this is awesome - this was one of my favorites from "NTFP", and it finished #8 on my 2005 year-end personal chart. 95% of the public won't even realize it was off an old album.
But I haven't heard any of their new songs yet (which has either been leaked or played at live performances), and I'm hoping they've got even better (new) stuff on the disc too.

Hey, a new single being played on the radio counts enough for me. Yes, because "Everybody Get Dangerous" was Weezer's official second single.

Yes, they've been off the chart for almost 2½ years now (it would be their second hit at Modern).

That depends if you count "Lost Songs" and the Godspeed EP. I would consider this their second full-length album since 2005.

I certainly do because I bought them. Even excluded, three full length albums in just over three years is pretty on it. Why do you seem to delete some of your old posts in certain topics? I see people quote things you've said, but your original posts are nowhere to be found.

Considering that this is the second largest forum on Proboards, server space is not a problem. And since I didn't quote you, it just makes the topic hard to read.
As for the song, I wonder if the new edit will keep in all the screaming or not.

Blue October did it. besides, this is my all time favorite Anberlin song, its great live too. is this one gonna be a full for real? Cities came out like a year ago... and it was kinda a let down, for me at least.

OK, I'm on board with the new version. They basically Red-Jumpsuit-Apparatused (is that a word?) the screaming in the middle. It's cleaner, but not too clean.
Since they're on a major label now (and with "Paperthin Hymn" making the top 40 with Tooth & Nail's promotion budget), I won't be happy with less than top 20 this time around.

OK, I'm on board with the new version. They basically Red-Jumpsuit-Apparatused (is that a word?) the screaming in the middle. The difference being, the screaming in "Face Down" was pointless, whereas the screaming in "The Feel Good Drag" climaxed the song. Oh, well. Whatever gets them the hit, I guess.

I love Anberlin.
They deserved more recognition than they've gotten so far.
Hopefully they can go somewhere with this. FGD was a good song, even if it is old. I agree that most people still won't have heard it though, so that probably doesn't matter too much.

My review of New Surrender:
1. "The Resistance": A - The heaviest song on the album, and their best opener (since "(Début)" is technically the opener for Cities). It reminds me a bit of Thrice... although it may just be the lyric "paper tigers" in the chorus ("Paper Tigers" is a song from Thrice's album The Artist in the Ambulance).
2. "Breaking": A+ - The minute this is released to radio, it will become my favorite Anberlin single. (Yep, already.) It's the perfect balance between their rocking side (see "Godspeed" and "Paperthin Hymn") and their poppy/catchy side (see "A Day Late" and "Adelaide"). The subtle vocal harmonies in the chorus are the icing on the cake. Absolutely flawless until the slightly-anticlimactic final 15 seconds. If there's any justice, "Breaking" will hit the top 10 at Alternative, Pop, and Hot AC.
3. "Blame Me! Blame Me!": A - Caps what might be my all-time favorite 1-2-3 punch to start an album. A mid-tempo track with a great hook uniquely suited for Stephen's voice.
4. "Retrace": B - I mentioned Anberlin's rock side and their pop side earlier. Well, there's also their ballad side. This showed up sparingly in NTFP ("(The Symphony of) Blasé") and Cities ("The Unwinding Cable Car", "Inevitable"). New Surrender continues the trend with 3 "lighter" tracks. This is the best of the bunch, perhaps why it's toward the start of the album as opposed to the other two.
5. "Feel Good Drag": A- - No, the remake is not as good as the original. Chalk it up to the primacy effect or whatever. But I can understand why it was redone. Let's just hope it pays off. (Side note: I don't know whether or not to put "The" in front of the title. The version on NTFP has it.)
6. "Disappear": B - Like "Hello Alone" before it, this is the uptempo "heater" track that isn't actually one of the better songs on the album (smart move - saving the standouts for a proper release). I do prefer "Disappear" to "Hello Alone", though. Fans of Blueprints for the Black Market will dig this one.
7. "Breathe": B- - The second ballad to show up here, this is sure to get the lighters flickering and cell phones raised. But it seems that on this album, at least, I prefer Anberlin as a rock band. I sometimes wonder why they even make songs like this (see the previous sentence).
8. "Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights)": B+ - This one finishes right in the middle of my album ranking, and it's not extremely heavy, poppy, or slow either. You could even say it's a "typical" Anberlin song... but hey, typical Anberlin is very good if not great.
9. "Younglife": B- - The third non-rocker, but it's more mid-tempo than the two previous. Don't really have much to say about this one.
10. "Haight St.": A - Finally, another A-range song. The closest comparisons here are "Autobahn" (off Blueprints) and "A Whisper & A Clamor" (from NTFP) for their anthemic sounds, but this one is a notch above even those. I was singing along with it by the third listen.
11. "Soft Skeletons": C+ - Wow, um... this sounds like post-grunge or something. Definitely the most anomalous-sounding song on this album, and not really in a good way. A bit depressing-sounding.
12. "Misearbile Visu (Ex Malo Bonum)": A- - As has become the tradition on Anberlin albums, the last song is by far the longest and most epic. At 6 1/2 minutes, this is actually the shortest closer of their past 3 albums. Trailblazer "Dance, Dance Christa Paffgen" just topped 7 minutes, while "(*Fin)" pushed 9. While I'm not sure anything they release will ever top "DDCP" (not even "Breaking"), "Misearbile Visu" acquits itself quite nicely. With the album's deepest lyrics and most impressive guitar solo, it's easily better than "(*Fin)", my pick as the most overrated Anberlin song. I'm still getting into this one more, and it might finish as an A before its run is over.
Overall rating: **** (4 stars out of 5) - Not quite the depth of NTFP and Cities, but its top 6 rival that of NTFP for best upper-half of an Anberlin album for me.
(From best to worst:) 1. Breaking 2. The Resistance 3. Haight St. 4. Blame Me! Blame Me! 5. Misearbile Visu (Ex Malo Bonum) 6. Feel Good Drag 7. Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights) 8. Disappear 9. Retrace 10. Younglife 11. Breathe 12. Soft Skeletons

I think this band gets progressively less interesting. Never Take Friendship Personal is still my favorite album by them. Cities has potential to be great, but is it just me or do the vocals sound really low in the mix on that album? It's like I can so imagine the album being so better if the vocals were like twice as loud.
