Sometimes I think KROQ adds and drops songs just so they can enjoy watching their influence in action as half the panel proceeds to copy them. Their handling of "If Rap Gets Jealous" and now this lead me to believe this strongly. They get off on how influential they are.

I thought we had established that this wasn't payola, but half the panel being KROQ sheep (as you aptly pointed out in the case of "If Rap Gets Jealous"). Not that I'm complaining at all, though. It's about damn time a song I love got some good breaks.

I don't really understand, what's so great about KROQ?

I don't really understand, what's so great about KROQ? They're the biggest alternative station in the country, which kinda sucks because they're also one of the most boring. They're for alternative what Z100 is for pop.

How does New York City not have a station on either the alternative or active rock panel? Does WXRK suck so much that they don't even include it? And why doesn't some company realize there is a huge void and put a good alternative/active rock station there. With that many people, there's gotta be a decent market for it.

WXRK is becoming a pop station, so it doesn't matter.

It's about damn time a song I love got some good breaks. Well, you might be right; it's just that I've never seen the KROQ influence take place this deeply into a song's life. Otherwise we could've been seeing things on the chart like "The Good Left Undone" still being in the top 20 and "Shadowplay" by The Killers as a strong recurrent. It's definitely unusual for a song that's half a year old and left for dead nearly two months ago just take off like that over the leverage of one radio station.

Well then, I guess it's up to Crushcrushchris and me to program a NYC rock station. I'm sure we'd have it up and running in no time...
But in all seriousness, there has to be a market for it there when there are that many people. If I knew anything about the radio business other than the music part, I'd go for it.

I can't believe how bad New York is for active/alternative radio. I mean, it's only got 8 million some people, is it that hard to set up a good station for them?

Having visited NYC many times, I'm convinced that 99% of the city is not interested in new rock and the other 1% are hipsters who wouldn't turn on the radio even if it were Vampire Weekend 24/7. As NY's K-Rock found out, the only audience is in the suburbs, and even most of them have moved on to other media at this point. The difference between NYC and LA (besides the obvious demographic differences) is that LA's KROQ has a history. New Rock in NYC has bounced around from station to station. (See www.infinitedial.com/2009/03/final_listen_wxrk_krock_new_yo.php ) In the 80's and early 90's, it was 92.7 WLIR/WDRE with a peashooter signal. In the mid-90's, it was Z100 playing Alice In Chains and Hole next to Madonna. In the late 90's, it was K-Rock, but K-Rock was more known for Howard Stern than the music it played. Then for a while, K-Rock went Talk and there was no one left. When K-Rock came back, they expected to get a warm welcome, but didn't realize that their audience was never really that attached to them in the first place. The only way NYC gets New Rock back is if it's on another distant (think G-Rock) or peashooter (think 92.7) signal, but 92.7 was bought out by a Spanish-language media company and even in the suburbs, New Rock is struggling, with the move of G-Rock to CHR. There should be new (weak) signals on 96.7 and 103.9 so I could see one of those signals trying New Rock, though I'm not sure they'd be successful with it.

Yeah, still #8 but the bullet is still great - and it's only 100 spins from #4:
1 1 INCUBUS Love Hurts 1785 1931 -146 8.825 2 2 KINGS OF LEON Sex On Fire 1678 1777 -99 8.734 4 3 PEARL JAM Brother 1630 1490 140 6.395 3 4 SHINEDOWN Second Chance 1523 1564 -41 6.159 5 5 AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT Sometime Around Midn... 1497 1438 59 6.262 6 6 PAPA ROACH Lifeline 1472 1394 78 5.427 9 7 KINGS OF LEON Use Somebody 1454 1268 186 7.057 8 8 ANBERLIN Feel Good Drag 1423 1274 149 6.720 7 9 KILLERS Spaceman 1341 1330 11 5.265 13 10 RISE AGAINST Audience Of One 1187 1104 83 5.025
In fact, the whole top 8 is very bunched up, with a gap of 363 spins separating #1 and #8. That number will keep shrinking until Pearl Jam (it would seem) takes over #1.

Anberlin only gained 2 spins on KOL, and there was clearly a station added to the panel or something, because even "Second Chance" gained spins, but... wow. "FGD" gained more spins than any song in the top 10 with a +48; "Use Somebody" gained 46, and "Brother" gained 37.

Y'know, it took me awhile to like this song, but basically the second it got its second wind just now, I'm suddenly sick of it.
