Notice that the two charts are exactly ten years and two day apart. According to the hot 100 in ten years the musical product has shifted considerably towards hard core hip hop and R&B. If the 90s could only get access to ARC or old Radio and Records charts it would look more consistent. But seriously have you thought as at least using hits like "Torn", "3 AM", Uninvited, (in addition to other big hits that will NEVER be heard on the countdown) as countdown extras like what the 70s used to do before they dumped their in house countdown for Casey Kasem after the merger took effect.

Thanks for posting last week's countdowns. I had work all weekend so I never got a chance to listen to the shows, let alone post them here. I take it you don't listen to the 90s countdown very often?

I listen mostly due to the miracle of XM on demand. You should be able to get Pop2k if you get one of the services and if you have internet listening you should have on demand. The dates however are a wild guess since neither shows tell what date they pull their chart. But again it would make a little more sense if the 90s could find a copy of an airplay chart versus the hot 100. The 2000s countdown show has improved more and in comparison to airplay it is a little more relavent than the 90s show.

This week on the 80s they are doing 1988 which breaks the record for the shortest time between when a year was featured not counting the consecutive weeks 1985/86 were featured at the beginning of this year. Since the VJ's are doing the same week in 1988 they did in 2010 We shall compare... First we start with the sloppy show they did in 2010.
This week it was 1988. It was certainly an odd show. In addition to the large number of substitutions, they apparently played a remix "We All Sleep Alone" at #30, and inexplicably repeated "Piano in the Dark" between songs 11 and 10.
5/7/1988 -- 40 Brenda K. Starr - I Still Believe* 25 39 Keith Sweat - I Want Her 23 38 Richard Marx - Endless Summer Nights -- 37 Glass Tiger - I'm Still Searching -- 36 Belinda Carlisle - Circle in the Sand -- 35 Poison - Nothin' But a Good Time** 37 34 Paul Carrack - One Good Reason -- 33 Cheap Trick - The Flame*** 40 32 Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat -- 31 Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning**** 38 30 Cher - We All Sleep Alone -- 29 Bruce Hornsby & the Range - The Valley Road***** 28 28 Toto - Pamela 34 27 Rick Astley - Together Forever 22 26 The Jets - Rocket 2 U 21 25 Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up 30 24 Hall & Oates - Everything Your Heart Desires 29 23 O.M.D. - Dreaming 19 22 Tiffany - I Saw Him Standing There 24 21 Brenda Russell - Piano in the Dark 10 20 Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror 17 19 Bruce Springsteen - One Step Up 11 18 Jody Watley - Some Kind of Lover 27 17 White Lion - Wait 08 16 Pebbles - Girlfriend 18 15 The Deele - Two Occasions 16 14 Foreigner - I Don't Want to Live Without You 20 13 George Michael - One More Try 15 12 Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams 12 11 Icehouse - Electric Blue "Piano in the Dark" 13 10 Samantha Fox - Naughty Girls (Need Love Too) 14 09 Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind 05 08 Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car 09 07 Taylor Dayne - Prove Your Love 03 06 INXS - Devil Inside 07 05 Natalie Cole - Pink Cadillac 06 04 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Anything for You 04 03 Aerosmith - Angel 01 02 Whitney Houston - Where Do Broken Hearts Go 02 01 Terence Trent D'Arby - Wishing Well
*Was actually #41. "Nightime" by Pretty Poison was #40. **Was actually #51. "My Girl" by Suave was #35. ***Was actually #47. "Say It Again" by Jermaine Stewart was #33. ****Was actually #46. "Strange But True" by Times Two was #31. *****Was actually #43. "I Wish I Had a Girl" by Henry Lee Summer was #29.

The songs shaded in gold were all the substitutions on the previous chart and the song at #38 probably did not chart at all on cashbox. (in the top 40 anyways). Which shows the hot 100 version to be an upgrade.

They said according to their facebook page that 1986 maybe after 84 which is next week which would be AFTER their summer special which means it will be five months in between 1986 episodes...Hmmm wonder if they meant to air 1986 this week or a few weeks ago because the VJs mentioned on Facebook that an error lead them to airing 1988 this week.

It looks like they basically recycled the 2012 list for this countdown. I counted 25 songs holding the same positions from 2012, while 15 & 10 and 13 & 8 switched positions and the top 5 was shuffled. What's hilarious about this is how they continue to insist that the list is compiled based on listener suggestions on Facebook and Twitter. Yeah, I'm sure the same exact number of people voted for the same exact songs as last time. They also kept saying how this "special" countdown is annual, even though they did not do one in 2013. Genius at work as always...

This week, 80s on 8 finally did 1986. It's the first 1986 episode since January... and it was also aired last year. Personally, if they were going to wait five months between 1986 episodes, I think they should waited one more week. ;)
6/7/1986 -- 40 Models - Out of Mind, Out of Sight 27 39 Tears for Fears - Mothers Talk 28 38 Simple Minds - All the Things She Said -- 37 Genesis - Invisible Touch 37 36 The Dream Academy - The Love Parade 40 35 GTR - When the Heart Rules the Mind -- 34 Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone -- 33 Janet Jackson - Nasty 39 32 Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer 24 31 Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love 33 30 .38 Special - Like No Other Night 21 29 Van Halen - Why Can't This Be Love 38 28 Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Like a Rock 32 27 Moody Blues - Your Wildest Dreams 18 26 Phil Collins - Take Me Home 20 25 The Outfield - Your Love 31 24 Fabulous Thunderbirds - Tuff Enuff 29 23 Falco - Vienna Calling 26 22 John Cougar Mellencamp - Rain on the Scarecrow 16 21 Miami Sound Machine - Bad Boy 14 20 Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls 10 19 Janet Jackson - What Have You Done for Me Lately 25 18 El DeBarge - Who's Johnny 23 17 Boys Don't Cry - I Wanna Be a Cowboy 22 16 Simply Red - Holding Back the Years 17 15 Heart - Nothin' at All 19 14 Howard Jones - No One Is to Blame 08 13 Mr. Mister - Is It Love 12 12 Culture Club - Move Away 09 11 Journey - Be Good to Yourself 15 10 George Michael - A Different Corner 13 09 Billy Ocean - There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) 11 08 The Jets - Crush on You 07 07 Level 42 - Something About You 04 06 Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark - If You Leave 06 05 Mike & the Mechanics - All I Need Is a Miracle 05 04 Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait 01 03 Whitney Houston - Greatest Love of All 03 02 Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald - On My Own 02 01 Madonna - Live to Tell
After "All I Need Is a Miracle," Martha Quinn noted the glut of Genesis-related artists on chart this week that Casey also talked about on that week's AT40, although she slighted GTR, who featured former guitarist Steve Hackett.

It's not rocket science, people...

Interestingly, Alan Hunter referenced Casey Kasem and American Top 40 as the source for a story about Kim Carnes covering a Smokey Robinson song ("More Love"), then proceeding to block him from the top spot. Can anyone confirm if that was indeed on the May 30 AT40 episode (or some other episode)? Finally have an answer to this one - it was the following week (June 6), rather than May 30.

I didn't realize this until today, but as a tribute after Casey Kasem's death on Sunday, 70s on 7 aired a marathon of AT40 episodes from each year of the decade. Here's each of the episodes they aired on Sunday/Monday: July 4, 1970: The Debut EpisodeJanuary 16, 1971February 19, 1972March 24, 1973April 13, 1974May 10, 1975June 19, 1976October 29, 1977August 5, 1978September 15, 1979

What a Feeling 01 02 Michael Jackson - Beat It 02 01 David Bowie - Let's Dance
No, that date is not a typo. They played a chart from May instead of June. Between this, the paucity of 1986 episodes, and the seeming screwup with the 1988 episode last month, and it's safe to say they're operating on fewer cylinders than usual.
One interesting note is that Steve Porcaro of Toto recorded an intro for "I Won't Hold You Back," and his presence on other songs on the countdown, like "Beat It" and "Even Now" was noted during the broadcast.
