This week’s Back in the Day Replay, from July 18th, 1998 (a repeat from just two years ago): 21 (03) Janet - I Get Lonely 11 (07) Jon B - They Don’t Know Quick notes: DTJB mentioned Blackstreet on "I Get Lonely," however she played the album version and not the Teddy Riley Remix (personally I would've rather heard the remix). "They Don't Know" is a AA with "Are You Still Down." Only TDK got played.

this marks the 3rd time in just less than 3 months they’ve played ‘93 and in all that time they haven’t gone back to ‘96 or ‘94 which haven’t been played since April. Furthermore, the entire month of July 1996 has never been featured in the ten years the show has been airing. And yet, they did manage to repeat some charts this month that were last played within three years.

this marks the 3rd time in just less than 3 months they’ve played ‘93 and in all that time they haven’t gone back to ‘96 or ‘94 which haven’t been played since April. Furthermore, the entire month of July 1996 has never been featured in the ten years the show has been airing. And yet, they did manage to repeat some charts this month that were last played within three years. And this week is 1995, a year they did last month as well.

Furthermore, the entire month of July 1996 has never been featured in the ten years the show has been airing. And yet, they did manage to repeat some charts this month that were last played within three years. And this week is 1995, a year they did last month as well. at the very least, rather than repeating last year with the July 29th chart, they decided to go for the July 22nd chart instead. Pop2Kountdown is 2000 this week. Good crop of stuff. This week’s Pop2Kountdown, from July 29th of that year (and I agree, a lot of good stuff in this countdown): 30 (26) Son by Four - Purest of Pain (A Puro Dolor) 29 (23) Avant - Separated 28 (26) Da Brat f/ Tyrese - What’chu Like 27 (05) Macy Gray - I Try 26 (18) Jay-Z f/ UGK - Big Pimpin’ 25 (21) Jessica Simpson - I Think I’m in Love With You 24 (07) Next - Wifey 23 (23) Dr. Dre f/ Snoop Dogg - The Next Episode 22 (03) 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite 21 (07) Nelly - (Hot S**t) Country Grammar 20 (02) Marc Anthony - You Sang to Me 19 (17) Sting f/ Cheb Mami - Desert Rose 18 (02) Faith Hill - Breathe 17 (03) Christina Aguilera - I Turn to You 16 (04) Eminem - The Real Slim Shady 15 (01) Janet - Doesn’t Really Matter 14 (01) Enrique Iglesias - Be With You 13 (13) BBMak - Back Here 12 (05) Ruff Endz - No More 11 (11) Jagged Edge - Let’s Get Married 10 (02) Toni Braxton - He Wasn’t Man Enough 09 (07) P!nk - There You Go 08 (03) Destiny’s Child - Jumpin’, Jumpin’ 07 (07) Creed - Higher 06 (06) Nine Days - Absolutely (Story of a Girl) 05 (04) Joe - I Wanna Know 04 (01) Aaliyah - Try Again 03 (01) Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want 02 (01) Matchbox Twenty - Bent 01 (01) *NSYNC - It’s Gonna Be Me

weekend of 7/10/21:
80s: 7/12/86 90s: 7/11/92 (previously featured in 2018)
weekend of 7/17/21:
80s: 7/16/83 (previously featured in 2018) 90s: 7/18/98 (previously featured in 2019)
weekend of 7/24/21:
80s: 7/25/87 (previously featured in 2020) 90s: 7/24/93
weekend of 7/31/21:
80s: 8/1/81 (previously featured in 2014) 90s: 7/22/95 (previously featured in 2013)
Notes:
-- in the tenth year of the 90s countdown, we once again completely avoid the entire month of July 1996 -- odd choice to play the 7/22/95 chart when it didn't match the calendar date, but given that 7/29 aired a year ago, I'm not complaining

Just as I'd predicted, this week's '60s Satellite Survey is a repeat from last year: August 2nd, 1969. It's the first 1969 survey we've gotten in 4 months though, so I'll take what I can get. According to SXM’s website, this weekend’s Back in the Day Replay will finally be going back to 1996. I wish we’d gotten that sometime in July, but whatever.

Is there a reason why the 60s-80s are top 40 and the 90s & 00s are only top 30? At first, I thought it was because songs were shorter back in the 60s & 70s, but that doesn't explain the 80s. Is it because of the attention span of their respective audience?

I don't know for sure, but I do know that radio trended toward smaller playlists as the years went on, so there's a mindset that lower-charting songs from the later years are less familiar than on earlier charts. Similar to how radio stations used to play the top 100 songs of the year but now play a top 40-50 at most.
