Random observation from this past weekend -- both the 80s and 90s countdowns played a chart dated 5/6. In both cases, it was only the third time in twelve years that a May chart was played from those years (1989 and 1995).

This week’s Back in the Day Replay from May 9th, 1998 (narrowly avoiding a six-time repeat) I didn't look at the chart closely enough, and for a while believed I was indeed hearing the six-time repeat. I find the 1998 the hardest year to listen to because of how many unfamiliar rap songs charted during that time frame. By the way, this was a repeat of the second chart ever played on the 1990s countdown. It hadn't been featured since 2012.

Every Time the 90s does a chart frm 98 and 99 i look at the charts Rick Dees has on another site and i see lots of pop and rock that is missing from a chart that leans heavily towards hip hop.

They went with 5/25/1985 on 80s on 8. This makes it the 7th new chart used in a row and now all of May 1985 has been cleared up, as well as all of May 1981. I’m pretty impressed although it is a week late decision from the May 18 1985 chart. If we get 1980 the week after it could be another streak running for new charts. However, if 1988 follows, we may end up with the same artist (hint from wham) again at # 1

Now I can see why they didn’t announce the #1 song for the 5/25/85 chart. The numbers on the chart that would have been announced by Mark were replaced with jingles in the queue. They should have planned accordingly knowing Mark was absent from this weeks VJs countdown. I also wished they had played Invisible by Alison Moyet, NOT Duran Duran version.
#35- Nightshift #28- All She Want To Do is Dance #22- Say You’re Wrong #16- Rhythm of the Night #10- Things Can Only Get Better #4- Axel F #1 Everything She Wants (I love this song btw so yeah I’m quite disappointed nothing was announced)

Every Time the 90s does a chart frm 98 and 99 i look at the charts Rick Dees has on another site and i see lots of pop and rock that is missing from a chart that leans heavily towards hip hop. Two reasons for this. One, by that point a lot of pop hits were unavailable as singles and it wasn't until the end of 1998 that these songs were finally allowed to chart. Two, at some point in 1997 the hot 100 radio panel added a whole bunch of hip-hop stations which significantly increased how many such songs were charting. This is why I wish they could use R&R charts for the 90s countdown, but I think there are licensing issues involved with that. Now I can see why they didn’t announce the #1 song for the 5/25/85 chart. The numbers on the chart that would have been announced by Mark were replaced with jingles in the queue. They should have planned accordingly knowing Mark was absent from this weeks VJs countdown. It almost seems like Mark's absence was not anticipated. Alan did not mention it, as he typically does, and it's unheard of to not introduce #1 even when the VJs are short-staffed. It's like they were fully expecting input from Mark and then had to scramble when they didn't get it.
