Most top 40 stations have insane 18-34 numbers in that 7PM-midnight daypart, so holding off on the rhythmic stuff until then makes perfect sense, although trying to be an 18-49 focused CHR/Pop station from 6AM-7PM before blowing off whatever adults are left at 7 PM makes for a very schizonphrenic radio station, if you know what I mean. Mix 108 (KBMX) in Duluth is "80s, 90s, & now" hot AC during the day and flips to full blast CHR at night, with Open House Party on weekends. Their ratings are thru the roof since they're the only game in town for anyone under 50 lol (there's a Lite AC, which is playing Xmas music now since it's that time of year). They report Hot AC to the trades (though they play urban product such as T.I., Kardinal, etc. particularly at night) and stream online. Yeah prob. with Hot AC after 7 pm is it's basically competing with prime time TV (remember readin that somewhere awhile back), so pretty sure that's relatively common for small-market stations that cover both HAC and CHR

Honolulu has exactly 1 CHR and *no* Hot AC stations (3 AC stations, 1 active rock and 1 rhythmic).
But KQMQ (the CHR) is pretty good about playing new stuff. They'll usually just add almost everything on the impact date. They eventually rotate almost everything into daytime airplay--both "I'm Gone, I'm Going" and "Unbeautiful" by Lesley Roy were played early on in their life, and they played "Untouched" by The Veronicas way before most other CHRs touched it.
The problem I have is their ability to let go--I'm Yours has been in medium to heavy rotation for about a year now (in some version or another). It's still in medium rotation (and only recently was it downgraded from heavy). Their recurrents also lack variety--there's at least 3 different Justin Timberlake songs playing each week in recurrency, about 2 Michelle Branch songs, and the entire Jack Johnson collection of singles.
So yay for playing new music, but boo for not letting go.

Their Top 10 songs include Pink, Jason Mraz, Lifehouse, Metro Station and The Fray.

I kind of liked that they were alternative, because them going in the Hot AC direction effectively takes away the only alternative station Honolulu has. Not sure which one I want more. If they keep it up (which it looks like they probably will), they need to change formats. Maybe I'm just peeved that there are 3 AC stations. Seriously, do we need 3 AC stations? The answer is no.

Is there any variety in the playlists of those three AC stations, or are they all copycats of each other, which would be really insane?

Is there any variety in the playlists of those three AC stations, or are they all copycats of each other, which would be really insane? With such a large variety of AC songs to choose from they're not exact copies of each other, but two of them mine from the same field of current songs and generally choose the same ones to play the most. The third one is more limited in its airplay of current songs. But really, unless you looked at the radio dial or you were familiar with the DJs (which don't play much of a role after the morning hours), you wouldn't know which station you were on just by listening to one of them. I would love it if one switched formats to Hot AC, Alternative (since the Alt station is more Hot AC now) or CHR. I'd even take a country station since we don't actually have one.

And here's another updated list of missed songs from the ridiculousness we call Atlanta CHR/Pop (and YES I'm counting songs in the top 50 that ARE played on other CHR/Pop stations!).... **=songs that Star 94 play in rotation and Q100 doesn't The Pussycat Dolls - I Hate This Part [in top 40] The All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell [in top 40] Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight John Legend/Andre 3000 - Green Light Kanye West - Heartless **Pink - Sober** The Fray - You Found Me Matt Nathanson - Come On Get Higher **Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) [in top 40]** Lesley Roy - Unbeautiful [in top 40] Thriving Ivory - Angels On The Moon [in top 40] Savage/Soulja Boy Tell'em - Swing [in top 40] The Veronicas - Untouched [in top 40] Ludacris/T-Pain - One More Drink Brandy - Right Here (Departed) [in top 40] Metro Station - Seventeen Forever [in top 40] **The Killers - Human** Miley Cyrus - Fly On The Wall T-Pain/Lil' Wayne - Can't Believe It [in top 40] Lil' Wayne - Mrs. Officer [in top 40] And out of tha songs listed in the top 40 right now, DO NOT EVEN tell me that "Lovers In Japan" is a well-deserved played song on Q100 before Brandy's, Metro Station's, Lil' Wayne's, T-Pain's, Beyonce's "Single Ladies", The Pussycat Dolls', Lesley Roy's, The Veronicas', or Thriving Ivory's songs! So I will say again, I'M NOT CALLING THESE MISSED SONGS BIG HITS, just to make myself clear! I'm just saying these newer rising singles need to be played! Thank you! Yeah now that guy from WAPE/Jacksonville took over programmin Star 94 and IMO he's completely ruinin it (was kinda afraid that might happen just cause WAPE has one of the "tightest" playlists in the country) Star 94's playin a whole lot more recurrents, (seems like) tightening their playlist way up, and still not playin rhythmic stuff until it's become recurrent, leadin to a pretty boring station IMO Stoopid guy from WAPE!!! >:( They are playin Come On Get Higher (ironically) in med-high rotation, but that's about all the creativity they have right now

Star 94 is really a Hot AC outside of their song rotation, which is still quite a bit more active than the Mix's rotation. Star 94 should be reporting to the Hot AC panel IMO, while Q104 in Cincinnati and some others should be reporting to the CHR panel for their inclusion of more hip-hop than Star 94 is playing! Regardless, I think Mediabase and BDS need to work on reclassifying several of their stations.

Yeah thing about Star 94 though is you'd never hear new HAC songs outta the box like Missy Higgins (and STILL can't hear Broken by Lifehouse cause it never went for CHR adds)...they took half a year to finally add Come On Get Higher (and now they're kinda makin up for lost time by playin it A LOT) - same thing happened with Say by John Mayer With Star 94 u just gotta be really patient...TMX adds stuff into pretty decent rotation right outta the box (now includin rap/R&B I guess...)

Did not know about Lifehouse and the more subtle differences between the two stations. I would imagine Star 94 gets onto the CHR releases before the Hot AC releases, though the similarities between the two stations are that they are both adult leaning. For example, Star 94 has already added the new Katy Perry song, while it may not be added on the Mix until it makes a dent on the Hot AC charts. Also, the Mix has not added Britney Spears yet, if at all. But in the longrun, I still believe both stations share at least 80 to 85 percent of each other's playlist, just they are played at different times.

...even though those songs are doing well on MB24/7? Case in point, FLZ here in Tampa for some reason has left a bevvy of songs that were doing relatively well within the Top 50. Here are a few examples: "All Over You" "What About Now" "Mercy" "Thunder" "Our Song" "Before He Cheats" "Let it Rock" "Addicted" Another thing they have done is that some songs will get little to no run until it's almost or has already gone recurrent... "Never Too Late" "Realize" (a song they alter by extending the intro) ...or will continue to use songs in heavy rotation that are recurrent while ignoring ones within the Top 50 and with a bullet... again, "Our Song" yet still airing "Teardrops on My Guitar" "Thunder" versus "The Great Escape" Does your CHR do this? Playlists today are extremely narrow. Have you heard a song play 20 times in a 24-hour period? Twenty years ago, that same song would have played no more than 7 or 8 times a day. Some of your favorite songs don't play on your favorite station because their playlist is already narrow, and I mean extremely narrow. In the 1980s the average pop radio station would have as many as 200 songs on their playlist. Today you'll be lucky if your station has 40 or even 50. They don't play the wide variety that they used to. That is why so many people no longer listen to mainstream radio. Even HD radio is showing signs of indifference to the needs of the public. At this point, only satellite and Internet radio have the widest variety of music for the people to listen to. That is probably why companies like Clear Channel are feeling the heat and laying off people. Bet the farm that by 2015 the music industry will no longer cater to AM/FM radio, and that a majority of the stations will be full of talk, news and sports.

Q102 in Philly briefly tried it in a PPM move and saw it didn't work, so they cut back.

Yeah actually you'll see a lot more differences now that Star 94 got a new PD (from WAPE/Jacksonville)...he's majorly narrowing the playlist kinda like I was afraid of (since WAPE's playlist is ridiculously narrow)...as soon as he took over the power spins increased up into the 90s, and it's pretty rare to hear a song more than a year or two old IMO only thing interesting about the station now is it's still playin Human and Come On Get Higher...hopin the new PD isn't fadin those songs out

I just realized KTXY (my local CHR) left off "Before He Cheats" from their playlist. They also only play the pop mixes of Taylor Swift's songs. They left out "Our Song," but had the other three pop singles. I think my local station will only play a country song if it has a pop remix, which is why they didn't add "Before He Cheats."

My station never played "Untouched" by The Veronicas.
And from the current Top 30, my station hasn't played "If U Seek Amy", "Day N Nite" and "That's Not My Name".

Well WIHT has put Come On Get Higher into regular rotation. Still cannot find Knock You Down, although it was played once this morning, that suprised me. Best I Ever Had has not touched WIHT's playlists despite heavy requests. Battlefield also has not made my station's playlist.

z100 is being ridiculously slow with You Belong With Me. They play it, but barely manage to give it 2 daily spins, while songs like Radar and Hush Hush - which are much further down on the CHR chart - get like 5 spins a day.
Considering the song is almost top 10 already and Love Story was a big hit for them, you'd think they'd be showing it a little more love.
Also, they've yet to add Daughtry's No Surprise and still aren't playing Nickleback's If Today Was Your Last Day (they tested it a few times but never officially put it into rotation).
