...even though those songs are doing well on MB24/7? Case in point, FLZ here in Tampa for some reason has left a bevvy of songs that were doing relatively well within the Top 50. Here are a few examples:
"All Over You" "What About Now" "Mercy" "Thunder" "Our Song" "Before He Cheats" "Let it Rock" "Addicted"
Another thing they have done is that some songs will get little to no run until it's almost or has already gone recurrent...
"Never Too Late" "Realize" (a song they alter by extending the intro)
...or will continue to use songs in heavy rotation that are recurrent while ignoring ones within the Top 50 and with a bullet...
again, "Our Song" yet still airing "Teardrops on My Guitar" "Thunder" versus "The Great Escape"
Does your CHR do this?

^Yeah Star 94/ATL is almost like the opposite...they leave off a lot of rhythmic songs like Closer, Dangerous, Lollipop, Sexy Can I, etc. - they added Stronger and Low almost when they were goin recurrent I think
Q100 is pretty random about songs they leave off their playlist, and the ones they keep in low rotation...
FLZ/Tampa has pretty much always leaned rhythmic I think

^A lot of those songs are covered by Star 94 (I'm Yours, Addicted, What About Now, That's What You Get, Shake It, Shut Up And Let Me Go, Rise Above This, Check Yes Juliet, and Thunder)...but ur right that Q100 plays very few currents - they did play Just Stand Up! (not sure if they've dropped it since), but seems like they only play chart-topping currents and select other songs that Star 94 doesn't play (like O. A. R., Rob Thomas, and urban-leaning songs although they keep those in pretty low rotation)
Also seems like it takes Q100 a lot longer to add songs than Star 94...I think they're tryin to target the slightly more "musically conservative" audience

What about Ryan Seacrest's AT40 snubbing out "Cry For You" by September?

My station pretty much adds any song that has a huge increase or enters the top 20.

yes
Houston has 2 CHR's KRBE is an adult CHR (leans HAC) and is a veteran CHR & KKHH is a rhyhmic-leaning CHR and it was launched in March of this year and it's one of the fastest growing CHR's ever it's ratings are extremley high for a new cHR
KRBE adds alot of HAC & Rock songs when they first go for adds for ex. "Mercy" "Light On" "Shattered (Turn The Car Around)", "It's Not My Time" , "Gotta Be Somebody" etc. and they add more rhythmic & new songs later but then again KRBE is owned by Cumulus and all of their CHR's have the same playlist except a few songs.
KKHH adds newer songs off the bat and they add some songs that are very big at rhythmic but they do add many HAC songs and rock songs but they have more rhythmic and more pop songs.

My station pretty much adds any song that has a huge increase or enters the top 20. That's the way things used to work... or in some extreme cases, stations would sometimes wait until songs entered the top 20 to be added. Of course where I live (in L.A.), I get to experience one of the kings of missed pop hits in KIIS FM... though they are somewhat better now than they were a year ago.

I LOVE THIS TOPIC HAHAHA!! Here are tha songs Q100 (WWWQ Atlanta) DOESN'T play... Kevin Rudolf/Lil' Wayne - Let It Rock Shontelle - T-Shirt Boys Like Girls - Thunder Savage/Soulja Boy - Swing Seether - Rise Above This Flo Rida/Will.i.am - In The Ayer Lil' Wayne/T-Pain - Got Money Artists Stand Up To Cancer - Just Stand Up! Jesse McCartney - It's Over Ne-Yo - Miss Independent Yung Berg/Casha - The Business Shwayze - Corona And Lime Rehab - Sittin' At A Bar We The Kings - Check Yes Juliet (Run Baby Run) T-Pain/Lil' Wayne - Can't Believe It The Tings Tings - Shut Up And Let Me Go Three 6 Mafia - Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body) September - Cry For You Metro Station - Shake It Paramore - That's What You Get T.I. - Whatever You Like Daughtry - What About Now Linkin Park - Leave Out All The Rest Saving Abel - Addicted One Block Radius - You Got Me They only have like 10 current songs and tha rest are recurrents out tha ass! It seriously bothers me that I constantly go online at tha crib and gotta find other CHR/Pop stations to listen to at home and can't even listen to our home pop station b/c they SUCK! Shontelle = moderate hit that isn't exactly blowing up the charts. I'm probably going to be dropping it within the next two weeks, myself. Boys Like Girls = see Shontelle, minus the fact that I've been off of that record for about two months. Savage and Seether = neither one are hits. I haven't played either and won't. Yung Berg, Shwayze, Ting Tings, Linkin Park, One Block Radius, September = weren't hits.

Savage and Seether both entered tha top 40 on radioandrecords.com (even though seether dropped off tha charts this week and savage is in his 3rd week on tha chart); One block Radius' song WAS a hit b/c it lasted longer than 5 weeks in tha top 40; September's song WAS a hit in tha top 40 as well; and Shontelle's song is becoming a bigger hit by tha week (entered top 20 at #19 this week). Now, some of these songs I've listed in my earlier post are now being played, but honestly that station needs to stop saying they play all the hits when there are SO MANY left off! Need proof, head down to Columbus, GA and turn on Q107.3. And here's an updated list of what Q100's (still) leaving off: Brandy - Right Here (Departed) Rihanna - Rehab Gavin DeGraw - Cheated On Me Akon - Right Now (Na Na Na) Hinder - Without You Kanye West - Love Lockdown Metro Station - Seventeen Forever The Killers - Human Taylor Swift - Love Story Shontelle - T-Shirt [[STILL]] Jesse McCartney - It's Over [[STILL]] Lil' Wayne/T-Pain - Got Money [[STILL]] T-Pain/Lil' Wayne - Can't Believe It [[STILL]] If they could play "Warwick Ave." by Duffy (which NEVER hit tha top 40) then they sure as hell can play these songs listed. Most of those songs you've listed though are duds. I'm guessing the PD probably is one of those who bought into the "Duffy hype" and decided to add the second song anyways despite how badly "Mercy" did here in the U.S.

^Yeah the Warwick Avenue add was a Cumulus thing (assumin that's who owns that station)...a lot of those songs are brand new, and I'd give ur station some time...I'm guessin Human by the Killers will be a moderate hit (just cause of early positive response) - It's Over, Cheated On Me, and Without You are more follow-up hits I think (don't think any of 'em are gettin that great a reponse) - those Li'l Wayne and Kanye songs'll only be added if ur station leans rhythmic (guessin it doesn't cause of the Warwick Avenue thing)

^Yeah Cumulus really sucks for new music (just goin by Q100) - seems like for most of the day on Q100 only one out of every 3 or 4 songs is a current...gettin kinda sick of hearin Unwritten, old Matchbox Twenty songs (even though I love MB20), and Move Along/It Ends Tonight by AAR - if they're gonna play so many recurrents wish they'd have a larger library or somethin

KISS-FM here in Dallas/Fort-Worth used to do that up to a year ago or so. Lately, they have been on point with new releases, even predicting big hits before they hit Top 50. Recent tracks include:
Right Now - Akon Unbeautiful - Lesley Roy See You Again - Miley Cyrus Shake It - Metro Station Love Story - Taylor Swift (also TOMG, OS) That's What You Get - Paramore Fall For You - Secondhand Serenade Disturbia - Rihanna Never Too Late - Three Days Grace Addicted - Saving Abel Leave Out All The Rest - Linkin Park Crush - David Archuleta A Milli - Lil' Wayne Check Yes Juliet - We The Kings
Recent big artist first singles such as Womanizer, If I Were A Boy, Keeps Gettin' Better, and Gotta Be Somebody debuted on the station and are all receiving high airplay unlike the past when hyped songs would take weeks to be first spinned.
One of the most surprising adds of the year came just this week when they put "Candle (Sick and Tired)" by a relatively unknown pop-punk band called The White Tie Affair in rotation. It is already on the nightly Most Wanted Countdown on the station. They also added "Krazy" by Pitbull feat. Lil' Jon this week, which could be a huge Hurban crossover. The PD is becoming riskier by the week and it seems like the audience is reacting well to it looking at the Summer ratings.
Very impressed by the station that was once adding the newest hip-hop songs just a year ago, and ignoring the rest of what an adds date had to offer. They have changed to a VERY current-focused playlist, adding new, fresh talent almost weekly and creating trends for the CHR chart.

^And that's tha type of hit music station I like to hear! Back when 95.5 in Atlanta was a CHR/Pop station before they turned Rhythmic, they used to be just like Kiss FM in Dallas. You always heard sumthin new, current, and they had Battle of the Hits where they put 2 new potential hit songs head to head every night. And Kiss FM down there is playing The White Tie Affair? Yo, that's what's really good!

Your definition of a hit is much different than mine... or pretty much any other programmer out there. If a song only hits the 30s but never gets higher (you could even go up to 25 or so), then it's not a hit. A hit is something that goes 20 or better with some longevity.

This song is going for adds in November, and is getting airplay on the video channels, so it's not quite out of nowhere. Of course, that doesn't take away from the fact that Kiss/Dallas is one of the better and more interesting CHRs in the country right now.

Tha point I'm tryin' to make is it wouldn't hurt to have some potential newer hit records in rotation than tha ones above tha top 20 played about 5 million times a day! If other hit music stations can do it, then dammit so can Atlanta! That was my main point. I made a mistake and said that all the songs listed were "major hits"... I'm aware that they not that huge yet or weren't that huge to begin with! I would love to turn on my radio and not hear "In Love With A Girl" (a tired ass recurrent) played far more than "Live Your Life." It would be nice to hear songs such as "T-Shirt", "Right Here (Departed)", and other potential hits in rotation to AT LEAST give tha public an idea of other good songs playing throughout tha nation right about now! Maybe then these tracks would be further up on tha charts!

^Thanks man...only thing about Q100 in Atlanta though is that I'm positive that if Star 94 weren't around, they'd be on new music sooner, and put new music in higher rotation - they're kinda playin the more "conservative" music route, prob. appealing to the more conserv. crowd in ATL that would rather heard recurrents they really like than cutting edge new music

I'm just comparing it to their adds from the past, which were usually anything in the Top 50. There is no way 2 years ago they would have added a song like that. They followed instead of led the big CHRs back then.

Yeah similar situation with WSTR/Atlanta (in terms of current-focused playlist) - in both cases, IMO it's gotta have to do with the huge influx of new wealth/"liberal" population to the burbs

^Yeah I think I even heard T. I. on Q100 a couple times lol (must've been at night)
Def. agree that Star 94 would be the perfect station if they added in some rhythmic stuff (when it came out) - likin how they're playin new Flyleaf song, new Coldplay, new Killers, new Fall Out Boy, new Gavin DeGraw (even though don't really like it that much), Bartender Song by Rehab, etc. - still waitin for them to add Angels On The Moon though...(and kinda wish they would've played Leave Out All The Rest)

We The Kings, Flyleaf, and Gavin DeGraw are all artists at their Jingle Jam. They'll promote that by playing this new music and then drop the songs afterwards. They did that last year with Avril Lavigne's "Hot" and also earlier with Goo Goo Dolls music.

KIIS in L.A. leaves out most of the white artists. I hear Leona Lewis, Britney and Justin every once in awhile.

And here's another updated list of missed songs from the ridiculousness we call Atlanta CHR/Pop (and YES I'm counting songs in the top 50 that ARE played on other CHR/Pop stations!).... Matt Nathanson - Come On Get Higher Only thing is WZGC's been coverin that for the past six months (seems like it)...otherwise IMO Star 94'd be on it by now And yeah still can't recognize new Kanye, Ne-Yo, and T. I./Rihanna songs (Q100 must only play them at night)

^Yeah Dave-FM is where I first heard Come On Get Higher way back at the beginning of the summer I think, and they played it pretty heavily thoughout the summer and fall...
Thing about Q100 is it adds those rhythmic songs, but most of 'em never make it outta nighttime rotation (even if they're #1 on their nightly countdown, etc.), so I never get to hear 'em...I wasn't really even familiar with Low until Star 94 finally added it, cause even that song never made it outta nighttime rotation on Q100

Most top 40 stations have insane 18-34 numbers in that 7PM-midnight daypart, so holding off on the rhythmic stuff until then makes perfect sense, although trying to be an 18-49 focused CHR/Pop station from 6AM-7PM before blowing off whatever adults are left at 7 PM makes for a very schizonphrenic radio station, if you know what I mean.

Mix 108 (KBMX) in Duluth is "80s, 90s, & now" hot AC during the day and flips to full blast CHR at night, with Open House Party on weekends. Their ratings are thru the roof since they're the only game in town for anyone under 50 lol (there's a Lite AC, which is playing Xmas music now since it's that time of year). They report Hot AC to the trades (though they play urban product such as T.I., Kardinal, etc. particularly at night) and stream online.
