The Z100 year end countdown is, as some of you know, a favorite of mine. Here's the 2005 issue. I'll add some comments on it later. I have all the playlists from this year and can post peaks and chart runs should anyone want to see that.

"Hung Up" made the countdown. :) Is this based on various factors?

And the great thing is, these are all songs from 2005!! Unlike a couple of countdowns that have songs from 2004 and even 2003 sprinkled in.

Bon Jovi on a CHR/Pop station's year end top 100... that's a nice sight for sore eyes!!!
I was hoping "I Don't Want To Be" would be there... maybe you can just edit the #99 song and sneak it in there... no one would notice the difference. ;)

Where is Somebody Told Me by The Killers. They still play that often enough and I remember over summer, as much as I like the song, I changed the station everytime it came on b/c they heavily played it over and over again for wayyyyy too long.

I was wondering that myself. It made it to #70 last year but seriously should have been at least top 20 this year for the length of time they played it.

Yah, "Somebody told me" should be on there. Also, "Gasolina" should've been a lot higher than it is considering they played the hell out of it.

Gasolina Debut: 03/22/05 Playlist Run: 12-7-9-7-4-9-15-Off (05/03/05); it had about 4 spins per week during the summer months.
According to Mediabase, Gasolina did not make the Top 50 based on spins alone.

Acutally, both "Since U Been Gone" (the #2 song of the year) and "Nobody's Home" both debuted in 2004. The reason why some countdowns have songs that appear in more than one year is because they were popular in more than one year. They're spill-over hits and it's something that's always happened.

I'm surprised to see "Look What You’ve Done" as high as they are. It's the only song in the top 30 on Z100's year-end chart that didn't make the top 20 on CHR/Pop, with the exception of "La Tortura" which they played heavily. Did they really play LWYD as much as songs like "Let Me Love You" and "Switch"?

Well, it looks like Z100 went against the grain and actually "borrowed" a Hot AC hit... as Jet was #23 for the year there... I wouldn't dream of our top 40 doing that. :(

I was surprised that "Somebody Told Me" made the R&R Year End chart. The song was way down at #36 in the first week of the chart year and never got any higher, plus went recurrent from the mid-40s. It must have gotten a ton of recurrent airplay, though I don't see why it would have, what with the popularity of "Mr. Brightside" in the spring.

Great list, as usual for Z100. It's nice to know that the biggest pop station in the country is still far and away one of the (if not THE) most diverse & balanced in the country. I seriously hope that others will begin to follow Z100's lead in 2006 and start to consider KIIS a rhythmic leader instead. I honestly don't know how this top 100 could have been any fairer or reflected what was popular in 2005 any better. It's nice to see that all four of the station's big 2005 techno hits made the countdown. (I'm almost positive this is a higher number than 2003 or 2004, when I think only 2 or 3 techno/dance songs made the yearend lists.) It's also nice to see some AC, latin, and reggaeton mixed in there with all the rock & rap. How many pop stations even touch those genres? If Z100 would just stop focusing on the SAME songs over & over at any given time, and played more of a selection of older music, I'd really start listening to them regularly again.

Ummm, I checked on MMR247 - it's their 9TH most played song of the year - it was NUMBER 9! It's retardonkulous that it isn't on their countdown.
True that.
Seriously.
Amen.
Z100 is the best radio station in the best city in the country.
OMG, I don't know where you are located de781, but I live on LI and go to school in Albany - hands down there is no station on U.S. soil that is better. Stations upstate blow, and I can only imagine how much worse it gets from there. I read people soo emo about Kiis(kiss?) in LA and how sad it makes them, I will never complain about anything regarding z100 ever again.
Though I do wish Mynt - How Did You Know, and Reina - If I Close My Eyes cracked the top 100 because they were played quite often in the beginning of spring-ish through early summer.

There were a ton of stations that were really late on "Somebody Told Me", Y100 in Miami being one of them, who played it heavily after being a recurrent. They played Mr. Brightside too but not as much.

Though I do wish Mynt - How Did You Know, and Reina - If I Close My Eyes cracked the top 100 because they were played quite often in the beginning of spring-ish through early summer. I live in northern NJ and have been a Z100 fan since the grunge days (the first song I ever requested on the station was actually "Wildside" by Marky Mark ;)). I absolutely loved the station through the 90's and early 00's, but internet radio sort of killed it for me during my college years in the early 00's. Lately, I've generally been sort of unhappy with Z100 due to its long commercials and repetition, but I honestly have to give them props for staying true to their genre and actually being pretty adventurous (dance, latino, reggaeton, Coldplay, Jet, etc) compared to typical pop stations. They could be taking the easy route, like KIIS, and I'm so glad they're not! What other pop stations even had the balls to play "I Like It" at all, let alone for a good chunk of a year in heavy rotation? (I could say the same about "Alone" by Lasgo, recent Deborah Cox, "Yes!" by Amber, Da Buzz, and Roc Project.) It's amazing to know that Z100 supported Mynt and Reina at all--I think the only reason that they didn't make the countdown was because they're basically 2004 songs. Z100 even added Mynt originally last summer (2004), but only in very low rotation. I think the same goes for "Somebody Told Me". They just played too much new music in 2005, and they wanted to fit in as much as they possibly could that was actually new in 2005, I think.

Why isn't "Sugar (Gimme Some)" on the countdown? I mean Z100 adds almost every song that goes Top 10 on R&R and it is #26 on the R&R year-end chart. Did they ever play that song?

I rarely remember hearing it on Z100, and I don't know why at all. I thought it was decent and prob would have liked it more if Z100 played it more heavily. Damn, Z100 has a big influence on music in my life and I am only now starting to realize.

The only time Z100 played that song was during Club Z during the summer as part of mix-in play. They never added it to the playlist, just like they never added Trick Daddy's "Let's Go."

What is this countdown like? Who is the DJ and does he talk about the songs? Elvis Duran and Paul "Cubby" Bryant host the countdown for its 9 hour duration, with help from the other ZJs who do fun year end wrap ups, sleaze, phont taps, listeners choice online poll standings, funny moments during the year, etc. Elvis and Cubby probably talk about 80% of the songs played, giving tidbits and fun facts. The rest of the time, a pre-taped and formatted voice will say the rank of the song as it starts.

True, but I think johnser was referring to a couple of national countdowns (one of which has several songs from 2002-2003 on it). Most yearend charts prior to this year took recurrent rules into account, preventing songs from spilling over more than two years.

I live on LI too, and it seemed like every time I turned on Z100 the last few months I got a horrific 50 cent song or something else of that genre. I'm totally turned off from that station. I've really stopped listening to them completely.
