isdale, and new Britney. Basically Britney and Tisdale don't have a chance in hell. And Cyrus is in consideration. Take a look at our e-mails:
ME:
You guys should play:
Miley Cyrus - See You Again
Ashley Tisdale - He Said She Said
and
Britney Spears - Piece Of Me
CHRIS/PROGRAM DIRECTER/AFTERNOON DJ:
i'll keep those songs in mind. we only play the "hits" so i
have to be selective of the new music we add. ashley tisdale
has been out for a while and it looks like it's not even going to break into
the top 40. britney's last single "gimme more" totally bombed and it looks
like "piece of me" is going to do just the same. the miley cyrus just came
out
a few weeks ago (to radio stations) so i'll keep an eye out on that one
to see how well it does. unfortunately some of the BEST songs never become
"hit" records and never see the light of day on radio.
take care and thanks for your email!
ME:
It's such a shame you guys only play "the hits". All songs have to start out non-hits right? Before they even get played. According to Mediabase, which I keep track of daily, Ashley Tisdale has a bullet of almost 100+ and was at #41 on the overall mainstream chart last time I checked. So stating it isn't going to break the Top 40 is a false accusation. Britney's "Gimme More" managed to go Top 20 on the mainstream radio chart (yes, it was a fast rise, fast fall song, but it still made the Top 20). "Piece Of Me" was almost nearing the Top 30 last time I checked with a healthy bullet. Miley Cyrus has been available to radio since the beginning of October, if I recall. Last time I checked the daily updates, she had a bullet of 200+ and cracked the Top 50. She may even go Top 40 in a couple days. So I'm sure she can become a 'hit'.
Also, answer me this. If you guys only play 'the hits', why did you have John Mayer's "Dreaming With A Broken Heart" and Pat Monahan's "Her Eyes" in such heavy rotation? Everytime I turned my radio on it seems as if I couldn't escape those songs. Yes, they're good, but they weren't 'hits'. Both never even went Top 50 on mainstream radio. Same with the new Lifehouse song, "Whatever It Takes". You guys threw it into high rotation a month ago and it just now hit the Top 50, and it doesn't look like it's going to go much higher than that.
I look forward to your response. :]

i'll explain how i go about adding songs into rotation on hot 975. is the
artist established? have they had "hits" before? how have their previous
singles done on the chart? i'll address ashley tisdale first: her song has
been out awhile and it's been steadily climbing the charts. i have full
access to mediabase and right now she sits at #41 up 95 spins...that's not
that big a deal really. she's not an established artist either (except the
"disney crowd"). so we will wait on that. as far as britney spears
goes...where do i begin! when was the last time she had a hit? her last 4 or
5 singles have ALL been big "stiffs" including "gimme more". the callout
research was HORRIBLE on it. people just don't really like her much right now
:( and hitting the top 20 doesn't make it a "hit" (top 10 is more like it).
"piece of me" may be up +300 spins, but that's because there are radio
stations playing just because it's britney and not because it's a good song
or has "hit" potential...that's why we will sit on that one, too! and miley
cyrus...she's up +240 spins at #46. that song JUST hit mediabase a couple of
weeks ago, so stations have just started playing it. she appeals MOSTLY to
12-15 years olds and that's NOT the audience we target on HOT 975. (our main
focus is 25-34 during the day and younger 18-24 at night) if i see the song
is going to hit the top 20 then it may be considered.
and to answer your question about john mayer, pat monahan,
lifehouse,etc...those are ALL HOT AC artists that all perform well with
"adults" and most are TOP 10 hits. we want to appeal to adults during the day
and that's why those songs don't play at night. actually, i dropped john
mayer last week from the playlist and it was never in heavy rotation. if you
look at the HOT AC chart, the last goodnight, matchbox twenty, pat
monahan,etc...are all doing quite well and that gives our station an "adult"
lean. there's not a HOT AC in the market, so we can cover that audience a
little bit.
is EVERYTHING we add going to be a "hit"?...no! but just because there is a
new song out doesn't mean we have to play it. MOST songs don't become "hits"
anyway ("hits" are defined a songs that research well with listeners and peak
high on the charts). for example, take "shadow of the day" by linkin park.
personally, i love that song, but that song has been moving really slow up
the chart, and from my experience songs like that usually crap out before
reaching the top 15. take "i don't want to be in love" by good charlotte.
it's crapped out around #15 and their last 3 or 4 singles have all been
"stiffs". look at boys like girls "hero/heroine"..that's not going to be a
hit either. "the great escape" performed pretty well, but it looks like they
are going to be a one-hit wonder.
it boils down to this...if i don't play the big "hit" records, people are not
going to tune in to the station. listeners want to hear a "familiar" song
that they like when they turn on the station. if i play a bunch of new music,
then no one will listen to the station and that's a fact.i look at call-out
research and artists history among other things to determine what gets played
on the station. if it's a "young" sounding song that appeals to 12-15 years
olds, then it's not a priority for my station becuase that's not the audience
we are after. there's not a big enough "teen" audience to support a station
that appeals to them. sure there are adults that my like some of those songs,
but not enough to get our station the ratings it needs to make money.
hope you didn't fall alseep reading my long winded response....zzzzzzzzzz
With his reply he pretty much eliminated 54685 other songs from being played on my station.
Hmmmmmm.... How do I respond to that? I want to hear Tizzy and Miley on my radio, y'all.
