Can a commercial help a song at radio? MCI's new commercial featuring Michael McDonald's cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" has been airing alot recently. It is one of the best tracks on his "Motown" CD. McDonald used the same tempo as Marvin Gaye, not the over-the-top version by Diana Ross.
Can ANMHE do as well as "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" or will it seem like too much the same from Michael McDonald?

I hope not. I am really disappointed at Michael doing these Motown remakes. Nothing beats the original, sorry.

True, nothing beats the originals. In fact, after Michael McDonald released "Motown", I tracked down a CD of Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duets. I was way too young to remember, but Top 40 music in 1968 was at it's best. Back to Michael McDonald, however. I feel projects like "Motown" are more a labor of love. I think he did heartfelt covers and are meant to enjoy on their own merits. I have a page on my site concerning the music of 1968 if you care to visit: www.keystonehighways.com/uubru1968.html

I should make a cover album battle between him and Mandy Moore when Mandy's album comes out.

Can Michael McDonald's "Motown" project end up with a hit single? "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" goes for adds across the board (pop/AC/urban) later this month.

This is slightly off topic, but I received my Michael McDonald DVD of his SOUNDSTAGE performance that aired last July on PBS.
The track list:
It Keeps You Running Sweet Freedom I Keep Forgetting I Heard It Through The Grapevine Ain't No Mountain High Enough Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing Black Water Take Me In Your Arms Minute By Minute What A Fool Believes Taking It To The Streets You Belong To Me
One of the highlights is the performance of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson performed with Michael McDonald. It was a great collaboration.
