This is horrible. Considering all of the hype that surrounded that competition, I'd expect something better.
The song itself is horrible. The lyrics are weak.
...and I don't see anything special about her voice. Apparently she can scream, nothing more.

This is the song she used in the competition, so it shouldn't be a surprise. Yeah the song is a bit Diane Warren-ish, but her voice is amazing. And the melody is somewhat decent.
I like it.

:o these are some powerhouse vocals! The song is very pretty too. Not sure what the radio world will do with this one...however Tarralyn Ramsey is a bright new voice to listen for in the future.

The name Tarralyn Ramsey sounds so familiar... wait, is she the one who won that VH1 Diva whatever-the-thing-that-is? So she's already releasing her first single?

Her album is in stores 12/9. It's the first release on the revived Casablanca Records headed by Tommy Mottola.

ok i don't watch tv. so i have no clue about tarralyn's past exsposure to the viewing public. but i am not impressed with this song at all. it seems kinda generic. and her voice really isn't that great. this song shouldn't go anywhere.

Billboard got this one right: www.billboard.com/bb/reviews/single_article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=2010109TARRALYN RAMSEY Up Against the Odds Producer(s): Cory Rooney Writer(s): K. Love, L. Dawson, C. Rooney Publisher(s): Songs of Universal, ASCAP; Cori-Tiffani/Sony ATV, BMI Genre: NEW & NOTEWORTHY Label/Catalog Number: Casablanca 21082 (CD promo) Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: November 01, 2003 Tommy Mottola's rejuvenation of Casablanca Records has already launched the career of MVP. Now he introduces the winner of VH1's cheesy "Born to Diva," which he co-produced. But make no mistake—this is a man who takes talent seriously, and debut single "Up Against the Odds" from Tarralyn Ramsey offers the same enviable brand of balladry that made a star of a certain other talent he developed, Mariah Carey. This lady grew up on gospel in Atlanta, and you can almost see her waving her hands to heaven as she tears this gorgeous song into rainbow-hued tatters. Her idol is Whitney Houston, and there are definite similarities in the best possible way. Still, placing this song at radio may be a challenge—perhaps adult R&B is her best bet. Every single soul that hears this song (helmed by show judge and über-producer Cory Rooney) will want to know and hear more; she could squash most of today's R&B/pop superstars with one decorated fingernail. Glory be!—CT

Kiley Dean can beat her up.
Tarralyn's name is hard to spell that is why I don't think it's gonna do well. This song doesn't sound right on CHR/Pop cos it's not hip. I mean, would you want to listen to "Up Against All Odds" when you're driving? Maybe it's Winter so it'll work. Anyway, this girl sounds old in a bad way (Not old in a good way like Mikaila or the red hair girl from PLAY). I think it's an okay song though.

I hate her singing technique. When she's singing low, it's out of the back of her throat... and when she's not doing that, she's yelling like she's in a competition with Christina Aguilera.

I don't think I could disagree with you more. Her voice blows Christina's away...and I don't hear the back of the throat thing at all. I don't think she's screaming. Aguilera's screeching is obvious as her voice loses any and all smoothness and gets rough as hell when she starts doing vocal runs.

Tarralyn is no Christina. Tarralyn has more power within her octaves, but she can't hit five octaves in full voice like Christina can.
That's beside the point though, I think this song is bound for number one on the Mainstream AC chart. I also think Tarralyn will be the next Whitney.

She misuses what she has though and makes her voice less appealing than it could be by the way she sings. Tarralyn voice is more powerful and I think better controlled. Of course, I haven't heard much from Tarralyn outside of this song and the television show. I like what I've heard thus far though.

I haven't listened to it in its entirety, but it is growing on me. I do like Tarralyn's voice. Can it compare to Christina's? I think it could. I would need to hear more of her music to really judge.

For whatever reason, I've had the biggest turnaround on this song that I can ever remember happening to me. Maybe it has to do with the Christmas season, a time where this song is perfect. This really is a nice classic, if typical, pop ballad with very good vocal work.
