One of the biggest hits of the Fall of 1998. The song helped Lauryn Hill win 5 Grammys for her album. I like the song a lot. She followed up the album with her MTV Unplugged 2.0 album in 2002.
What do you think of the song?

I like it, but I like "Ex-Factor" a LOT more.

A good song, but my least favorite single off of the album, and definately overplayed.
"Ex-factor" is amazing. "Everything Is Everything" is not as good as "Ex-factor," but better than this one.

I absolutely love this song, always have. I can't blame TV for overplaying it, it had a great video. The album was pretty good. My favorite single from the album was "Everything Is Everything", though.

It sampled an old Ella Fitzgerald song that was later used in a Zip-Lock commercial.
Wasn't this the final #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 before they started allowing non-singles to chart? Or maybe that was "Lately" by Divine.

Wasn't this the final #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 before they started allowing non-singles to chart? It was the final song to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 before the big changeover.

it's a fantastic song, as were almost all of the songs on lauryn's album, which is one of the best albums of the 1990s. the fact that she's not followed it up is one of the biggest disappoint of the 1990s.

"Doo Wop (That Thing)" is a good song.
Lauryn Hill should make a new album. This new album should have drums, not just the acoustic unplugged music. "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is a very good album. My favorite songs from that album are "The Lost Ones", "Ex-Factor", and "Final Hour".

I think she's got a great voice, however, her music is borderline Hip-Hop and I just can't get into it.
"Nothing Really Matters" is about the only song by her I can tolerate.
I won't even listen her (and the Fugees) version of "Killing Me Softly". >:(

The song is pretty good but X-Factor is the best song of Lauryn Hills career. I was just listening to X-Factor like 20 minutes ago. I have never not liked that song.
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is my fav album, along with The Love Below and Dangerously In Love. Runnerups are The Black Album, Destiny Fulfilled, and Full Moon

Great album.
This is a good song, but not as good as "Ex-factor" which I'd say is the best track on the CD.

I was crazy about this song back in 1998-99. It was hot and catchy. I would turn on the radio just to listen to it. I ended up becoming a fan of the song as well as Ms. Hill. Lauryn being a part of the Fugees (Killing Me Softly and Ready Or Not) made me like her even more.
The video concept was great too. I believe I liked it more than the song. The split-screen technique (one screen per era) made it a classic.
I like the message in the song as well.

Great album. This is a good song, but not as good as "Ex-factor" which I'd say is the best track on the CD. Agreed. But The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is my personal favorite.

This song was absolute garbage, it made me want to make a deep fried piece of p00p and have LH eat it, she sucked as a person too. This song wasn't THAT big, I believe it barely scraped the CHR Top 30. The video wanted to make me Phase 11 myself as well.

Sure it wasn't a masterpiece, but it was a heck of alot better than most R&B songs being played in 98'.

How is there not a thread for this?
Title: 'Doo-Wop (That Thing)' Artist: Lauryn Hill Year: 1998 Label: Ruffhouse/Columbia Billboard Hot 100 Position: 1
Written & produced by Lauryn Hill.
I didn't know this wasn't a platinum single, but apparently it's only certified gold. It's undeniably her biggest hit, debuted at the top of the chart, and deservedly so-- it's a brilliant song. A shame she never recorded a followup to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

I really enjoy this one. Her vocals are on point. I do wish she had released a follow up album, but The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is still great. Oh, and it's great to have a thread for this now.
