#24 CHR/Pop #32 overall Hot 100 #03 Club Play Dance #04 United Kingdom
It was not until now that I appreciate this song, well, more than that actually. I am not quite sure why I did not like it then. When I was in the UK I guess for one, they gave this one too much airplay. After listening to this song and some of their others I may decide to get their "Singles" or Greatest Hits collection.

The thing I remember about this song was its weird chart run on AT40. It had moved from 34-32 the last week of 1987, then fell back to 38. Then, it moved back up to 34 and I remember Charlie VanDykke, who was subbing for Casey that week, said, in the intro of the song, something like, "Well now we're up to a song that can't seem to make up its mind which direction to go in the countdown. Two weeks ago, it moved up to number 32, then it dropped to number 38 and this week it's back up to number 34." Casey made a reference to its odd chart run the week after when it dropped back to number 36. You might think it moved back up the next week but, in fact, it dropped out of the Top 40 that week. My opinion of the song - pretty good; it was representative of late 1980's alternative rock.

I love this song... I really didn't care much about it back then, probably because the only times I heard it was on AT40 (my local station apparently didn't give it much airplay).

One of my Top 10 songs of all time. I love the haunting melodies and then at the last verse when you expect it to rhyme and then it breaks the rhythm. This song is pure genius...I can't get enough of it. This seems to be one of those songs that's more popular now than it was when it was out.

Great song, as long as it's the original. It was remastered in 1994, which I'm not a fan of. For a band that didn't have a lot of U.S. hits, they had some really great music that I discovered later on, especially "Blue Monday".

I love this song. This and "Bizarre Love Triangle" were why I bought Substance in 2000 (also to hear the original version of "Blue Monday" finally.) Then all 3 of those ended up getting overshadowed by the eight minutes of aural bliss called "Perfect Kiss."

"I used to think that the day would never come..."
Simply an awesome song. I'm not sure where it would place on my all-time favorites, but I'm sure it'd be somewhere in the top 40.

One of the songs that made me the New Order fan I am today. It was this, "Round & Round", "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Blue Monday" that made me steal my sister's Best Of cd. I got hooked on the whole thing, and eventually got hooked on most of their albums. Still a favorite of mine, but I hate the Morning Sun edit. It butchers the chorus.

Which version is considered the "Morning Sun edit"?

The chorus says "I used to think that the day would never come I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun"
It gets rid of "my morning sun is a drug that brings me near to a childhood i lost replaced by fear"
I'm pretty sure that's what the edit is called, I could be wrong.

In that case, the "edit" is the version I originally became familiar with. Therefore, when I first heard the full-length song it sounded strange to me. Either way, it's one of my favorite songs from that era.

This is a damn good song from a damn good band.
Unfortunately they couldn't make a decent video at the time.
Then again, were any 80s alternative/new wave bands able to?
I know New Order and Depeche Mode had some pretty crappy videos.

Hmm, the "morning sun edit" is news to me. Did someone think the real words were too much of a downer, or what? Either way, "that my life would depend on the morning sun," to my recollection, is what Bernard says the last time through in the original version.

Yup, the chunk they take out fits right in the middle, after the first time they say "morning sun". As far as videos go, this one was pretty bad. I think the video for World was alright. That's the only one I've seen that I didn't think was stupid.

I really like this song from them. I too wish it had done better. I hear it all the time on the local dance station and on the adult contempo stations.
The Extended Vocal Mix is where it's at for this one.

What's the difference between the original and (True Faith 94- the link I posted earlier?) The beat in the '94 version sounds more synthesized than the original. I prefer the original.

I love this song. I think it's possible that some radio stations at the time thought that 5:51 was too long and that removing those lines would make it a shorter song.
But it's one of my favorites from New Order.... as far as 80's bands of that sort making music videos, I thought that the Cure even made good music videos back then. Like "A Forest" and "Close to Me".

They were generally pretty good, and this was one of their best. Still enjoy this one today!

It's hard to believe that some people might not know who New Order is.

I've been looking for the "Morning Sun" edit for quite a while ever since I heard that mix on AT40 flashback. I bought the full length mix at Itunes. I guess it's better than nothing, really.

One of my favorites, I actually went to a record store in Memphis trying to find it- they would play it in the gay clubs all the time, with "Bizarre Love Triangle"- great stuff.

It's hard to believe that some people might not know who New Order is. Actually, I can. Given that they're not all over the radio like some artists, they don't get the exposure that goes with it.

It's hard to believe that some people might not know who New Order is. It's not that hard. I've known about them since 2005, but I didn't really *know* about them until a couple months ago.

That's okay, picpak. You are a teenager. When I was 17, I didn't know a hell of a lot about N.O. either. I think I was 19 when I suddenly became intensely interested in them & a lot of other 80s bands, but before that I only liked and knew a few of their songs. I meant that it's reasonable to expect that anyone who grew up during their active years should at least be aware of them.

This is a glorious track. One of their best, especially the Shep Pettibone rework.

One of the greatest New Order songs ever. I tended to hear it as 80s gold/flashback on either 101.9 the Mix, Q101 or B96 growing up. Not which New Order song I like more, this one, "Bizarre Love Triangle", or "Blue Monday". I'll never grown tired of this one.
