Much as I hate Foreigner, I have to say that this is a nice tune. Backing vocals performed by the New Jersey Mass Choir, whose own gospel version of the song was even better than this one.

For some reason, this is still Foreigner's signature song. And one which definitely didn't fall into their usual pomp hard-rock style. Maybe that's why it became their biggest worldwide hit.

I like it. Could've ended up being a cheesy power ballad, but they pulled it off nicely.

Tina Arena released a great cover of it as a single from her album "In Deep."

This is a good song. # 4 song of 1985 on the Pop Radio Top 20 yearly chart.

Good song. Much better than Wynona's version.

I like it. Could've ended up being a cheesy power ballad, but they pulled it off nicely. i agree, and this and WFAGLY were the perfect songs for me to cry sell out because i was doing it to similiar bands like asia, and journey and reo go cart. but maybe because i was really a big fan of foreigner and totally biased, i always had to think that their sellouts were a step above. someone mentioned in the orgasmic moments topic in your opinion please about this song, and i have to agree. this is really a great classy ballad by a rock band, along the lines of Let It Be and Long And Winding Road, which to me were the first 2 power ballads.

This is a good song. # 4 song of 1985 on the Pop Radio Top 20 yearly chart. It was also the #4 song of the year in 1985 in Billboard as well thanks for staying there for 2 weeks at #1 knocking Madonna's Like A Virgin

It's a bit on the sappy side, but it's a classic. It's one of my Dad's favorite songs of all time.
I did not like Mariah's version at all. It was mediocre at best, especially the video.

I remember hearing this all my life and I've always really liked it. That classic-sounding, haunting production really make up for the lame lyrics as far as I'm concerned.

It's iconic, though IMO it is a bit "REO Speedwagon-ish" and a pale imitation to their better "Waiting for a Girl Like You". Now talk about a classic....

"I Want to Know What Love Is" was released as the first single from Foreigner's fifth album "Agent Provocateur" on November 13, 1984. There's a bit of controversy as to who wrote what as Mick Jones and Lou Gramm seem to recall different parts being contributed by each. "Love" features backing vocals from the New Jersey Mass Choir. Mariah Carey remade it for her 2009 album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel."
36 years ago today...Foreigner scored their first and only chart topper on the Hot 100 as "I Want to Know What Love Is" started a 2 week run at No.1. The song also No.1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and No.3 on the Adult Congtemporary chart. In the U.K. it peaked at No.1 and stayed there for 3 weeks. I love this record. My older brother had the album on vinyl and he would always play this one twice.
