I have never been able to get into their 'lighter' stuff. I mean, how can you compare "Jungle Boogie" to, say, "Celebration"?

Kool & the Gang started out as funk band, but started to get more into the crisper pop and R&B sound into the 1980s. That's when they had some of their biggest hits.
I liked just about all of their songs - from the funky "Jungle Boogie" to their discoish "Ladies Night". "Joanna" was a catchy pop tune which demonstrated that Kool & the Gang could do a variety of musical styles while not losing their R&B core audience.

This is alright, I prefer many others by them though.

I like it, but I too prefer others by them.
Hit #1 on the R&B chart.

Haha, yeah this is more on the vanilla side. There are several of their singles I'd rank above it. It doesn't suck though.
