This infectious song had two chart runs in the 80s - hitting #26 in early 1984 and then #22 in mid-1989.
Joe FM plays this occasionally, and I've heard it on WTBT as well.
chartboy's site lists the second run as "Send Me An Angel '89", which suggests a re-release by it being re-recorded. Is that true?[/font]

Yeah, the 1989 version was a re-recording (or so the band claimed... listening to the two versions, I can't tell much difference).

There isn't any difference. I've listened to both "versions" back to back and didn't hear any difference whatsoever. If I had known that when I was writing down the charts from 1989 (as I heard them on Countdown USA), I would have marked the song as a re-entry the week it "debuted" and included its 1984 chart run in the "weeks on chart" tally.

Great 80's tune, one of my faves from '84.

The tile "Send Me An Angel '89" is correct, and I agree with it. Just like Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy 93", Bananarama's "Cruel Summer 89", The Police "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86"... etc. Music-wise, both versions are different, with the 89 remix being more "modern-sounding".

I love it. The original version is the best one.

There's definitely a difference. The original is very early 80s-sounding, while the 89 version sound very "1989", if you catch my drift. The 1989 is a remix. Good stuff. Curb re-remixed the track again! Not sure which year though, since they were never released at the time the mixes were completed... they are available now for legal download at the usual places. ALL OF THEM suck though... stick with the 1989 remix.

Being someone who started listening to Pop radio in the 90s, that doesn't make much of a difference to me.

I remember the video and of course the song from being in the UK where it charted much better.

I think this may be my favorite 80's song, even though it certainly was late 80's. Back prior to the mp3 age, I searched for years for this track. My friend finally found it, and it turned out to be the original, which we weren't familiar with. What a letdown. But somewhere around '96 perhaps, we found a compilation from K-Tel with the '89 mix. I still remember seeing this video on TBS's Night Tracks. I know I have it on videotape somewhere....actually.....a dj I work with told me he'd burned it to dvd for me months ago. I need to remind him so I can finally see it again. I'm pretty sure 1989 was the last time I've seen it! Whenever I go to our club's "80's night" I ask him play it.
Peace, Ben

I love the 1989 version. It was used in the movie The Wizard with Fred Savage and Christian Slater. What? I loved that movie.

Send Me An Angel reached #29 in 1984 on the Hot 100 and the re-recorded version reached #26 in 1989

Good song.
For the longest time, I thought this was by the Pet Shop Boys.

As I said over a year ago, I prefer the original version than the re-released version of 1989, but I had never heard the original until years after the re-release.

Yeah, it's easy to tell the difference between the two. The 1986 version is more watered down (IMO) than the one that hit the Top Ten in the spring of 1981. Same goes for the re-recording of Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4", which charted around the same time. The original is more fast paced and the chord progressions in the verses are different.

I used to have a 12 inch of this and not sure what happened to it actually... but this was like 6 years ago when I started getting vinyl records. Anyways, this song sounds amazing on proper equipment lol. I checked out some of their other songs and didnt care much for anything I heard but this is a great song nonetheless.

Oh hey, my weird font phase in the OP. Having now heard both versions, I can definitely say I prefer the 1989 version. The main difference between the two is, the original song is more of an atmospheric pop song, with a heavier emphasis on its synth line and heavier drums. Whereas in the 1989 version, the drums are leaner, and the tempo's definitely been sped up, leading to a straight-ahead pop/dance number. The original is okay, but having heard the 1989 version first (didn't realize that was what I'd been hearing until finally hearing the original years later), the tempo of that one draws me in, making the original feel plodding by comparison. I can't really fault the original too much for what went into it, but having enjoyed the 1989 version for years before finally hearing the original, I feel like I encountered it much too late to pull ahead of it. In any case, here's both:

Love this one. I remember listened to it (the 1989 version) at swim meets when I was really young.
