I never really liked this one. My favorite Paul Young song would be the ever-obscure "Heaven Can Wait", which was his follow-up to "Oh Girl". The song was one of those songs that came and went quickly. It seemed to only surface on small market stations, as it was the now defunct Gavin's most added single in early December, 1990 and, from what I could tell, all 87 stations that added the song were small market. On the weekend of January 11, it debuted on the Gavin chart at number 40, stayed at #40 for another week and then dropped off the face of the earth. Too bad, since it was a great song. My second favorite Paul Young song would probably be his biggest, "Everytime You Go Away". Now I'm sure you've all heard that one. "Come Back And Stay" doesn't really do a thing for me.

Come Back And Stay was non-remake as well as Love Of the Common People which didn't do all that hot. If you recall of the other songs you've mentioned, he has covered Ann Peebles' I'm Gonna Tear your Playhouse Down, The Chi-Lites' Oh Girl and David Ruffin's What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted. They're all good songs, but at some point I'm not all too crazy about them. But Paul has put them where it can be heard.

Young did a cover of "Wherever I Lay My Hat" which I think was an obscure Marvin Gaye song (never heard original version.) He also did a soso cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" the old Joy Division classic. I think "...Common People" is a remake too C.C., of a country song from the 40s.
As for "...Stay," I love it!! My fave is "WILMH (TMH)"

Both "Come Back And Stay" and "Love Of The Common People" were covers... "Come Back" was originally by Jack Lee, and "Common" by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins (Waylon Jennings also did a version in 1967).
And of course his biggest hit "Everytime You Go Away" was originally recorded by Hall & Oates.

A bunch of us saw him in concert when the Jones Beach shows here in New York were located in the Piers in the mid 40s in Midtown Manhattan, and the whole show my friend kept saying that Daryl Hall was gonna come on stage and sing with him, and he finally showed up for beginning of the 2nd verse. Nik Kershaw opened and put on a fine hr.+ show, tis a shame he wasn't more than a curiosity here in the states. underrated IMHO.

But that made me learn of other covers Young has done. I kinda thought that maybe out of all of his hits during the 80s, he has not released one song that WASN'T a re-make. Thanks again for the info....and that goes for you, too, stevie nice.

I like this song. My favorite by him is probably "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down." I just heard that one, on the 10/5/85 AT40 Flashback show (which I have in the CD player right now). The song I mentioned earlier, "Heaven Can Wait" sounds a little like that song. But "Playhouse" is nowhere near as good as "Heaven", IMO.

Even before going solo, as a member of the Q-Tips, Paul Young primarily sang cover versions of other people's songs.Β That wouldn't have been all that unusual if it was in the 50s or 60s (even the Beatles started off primarily doing covers) but for the 1980's it was somewhat of an anomaly.Β For 2000's it's almost unheard of, e.g., Celine Dion might record the occasional cover song like "All by myself" or "The power of love" but for the most part singers who don't write their own material have professional songwriters either writing or ghostwriting original songs for them.

Same here.
When the songs covered are as obscure as these (I never heard the originals before Young's versions came out), I think it's fine. They're finally getting the exposure they originally deserved, but didn't get . But if they're covers of great, familiar songs like "Oh Girl", then I'm disappointed and nearly always like the original much better.

Very good song. I used to have Paul Young's greatest hits CD and there was a version of "Don't Dream It's Over." But it wasn't as good as Crowded House's.

Thought this was a good song. Much better than his silly "Every Time You Go Away."

Do you remember Paul Young's first ever Top 40 hit in 1984 called "Come Back and Stay"?

Speaking of remakes, the epic finale and the first single from 'The Bodyguard' was planned to be Jimmy Ruffin's 'What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted'. In fact, David Foster had already worked on the demo twice for Whitney. As it turned out, Paul Young had just recorded a cover for the film 'Fried Green Tomatoes' (it reached #22 on the Hot 100 that year) prompting Kevin Costner to look for an alternate song. He came across the Dolly Parton classic and the rest is... herstory. Attachment Deleted

This song was in the GTA Vice City Stories soundtrack (on the Flash FM pop station) but I didn't play that game back then as opposed to the other "3D-Era" Grand Theft Auto games. As for the song itself, I first heard it listening to old 1984 episodes of "American Top 40 w/Casey Kasem" on Mixcloud. While I do like it, my favorite from Paul Young is "Everytime You Go Away".
