I have a funny feeling this one's been done, but the search function says otherwise.
Anyway, this is one of the biggest hits of the 80s and even after 20+ years, it still gets massive airplay on AC, hot AC and classic rock radio. EBYT got more exposure when P. Diddy sampled the music for his big 1997 hit "I'll Be Missing You".
Still a great song after all these years, and as much as we talk about songs that have been overplayed over the years, this one has to rank among the most overplayed.

The top song of 1983 (set a new record of 8 weeks at #1), and a great one at that.[/font]

Good timing on this topic. I've just recently rediscovered this song in the past week after somehow managing to not hear it for a while. I love it!

Very overplayed... it still shows up occasionally on the AC chart (sans recurrent rules).
I'm still burned out on it, but it's not bad. "King Of Pain" is my favorite from the Synchronicity album.

Yeah, on every countdown of the Top songs of the 80s that I've listened to (based on the R&R chart), this one has always come out on top.

I love it, but it most certainly was overplayed for about a decade. Only in recent years have I wanted to hear it again.

It's a classic. I did hear this a little too much, but now I like hearing it.

Brilliant guitar riff.
This is a very dark song, but I think it has lost some of that quality with the overload of airplay. It's not really a "love song," instead it is almost a stalker song. There is a moment in the video where Sting turns his head and half is dark and the other half light and he says "I'll be watching you..." Creepy!

About the song, Sting said something like "I consider ("Every Breath You Take") a nasty song. It's about surveillance and ownership." Ray Parker, jr. uses the lyrics "Every breath you take, I'll be watching you, girl" in his song from later in 1983, "I Still Can't Get Over Loving You".

About the song, Sting said something like "I consider ("Every Breath You Take") a nasty song. It's about surveillance and ownership." Yep, something to that effect. He also said that he wrote "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" as an antidote to Every Breath You Take.

Here's a couple of details about the song from Songfacts.com: This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. It is about an obsessive stalker, but it sounds like a love song. Some people even used it as their wedding song. Sting wrote this after separating from his first wife, Frances Tomelty.

On AT20 this week, Casey Kasem mentioned its the most requested song ever at the BBC with 400 million requests.

This is easily my favorite song of all time. If I remember correctly the old R&R boards had a tourney to decide the #1 song of all time and this came out on top. I love it, and IMO overplay shouldn't change the quality and opinions of it. It was great back when I had AT40 flashback with this being played as #1 for most of the summer.

What else can I add about this song? Nothing really. It's class. Sure it's about a stalker, but it makes his dark and twisted view very appealing.

It was great back when I had AT40 flashback with this being played as #1 for most of the summer. That's right, didn't they feature 1983 about three or four times with this song being on top? As I recall, they also had about the same number of 1982 shows with "Eye Of The Tiger" at number one. Yes, this is easily the most overplayed song of the 1980s. Irock mentioned that he has found himself wanting to hear it again. Just turn on an 80s-based AC station, listen for about an hour and you're bound to hear it.

38 years ago today, "Every Breath You Take" by The Police started an 8-week run at No.1 on the Hot 100 Singles chart, becoming their first and only chart topper. It was released as the first single from their 5th album "Synchronicity." Billboard named "Every Breath You Take" the No.1 Single of 1983. In 1984, Sting received the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. I don't think many people care that it's about an obsessive and possessive lover who is always watching the object of his affection. Many people even deem it a love song. Anyway, it's one of my favourite '80s records.

The bridge on this song is masterfully executed, itโs the part that makes the song so goddamn enduring for me.

Love it. So sad and haunting.
I also love that it was sampled in Diddy's I'll Be Missing You.

One of the Police/Sting's best songs despite the overplay and the whole stalker undertones. Used to hear it all the time as an 80s flashback on the AC stations (Lite FM 93.9, 100.3, and 101.9 the Mix) in my market back then. I'm also well aware of Puff Daddy/P. Diddy or whatever his name is now sampling it in his mega-hit from 1997, "I'll Be Missing You".

Both this and Diddy's "I'll Be Missing You" make me sick to my stomach. I find them awful.

I could never hear this again and it would be too soon. So flipping overplayed.
Yes, it's an okay song - at best.
The Police have so many better songs.
