Heard this for the first time this past Saturday night. When it came on I wasn't sure what it was, but I soon heard the title and then I knew.
This sounded really good. The melody - if I may call it that, since it sounds so guitarish-heavy - actually makes me think of "Somebody's Baby" by Jackson Browne (another really good song).
This is one of those songs where, I hear the melody, and I can't help but wonder why it didn't fare better than it did (#16 on R&R, but it did have a 10-week run).

I like it but, for me, it's not really one of his memorable songs. It's good but it probably wouldn't even make my Joel top ten.

Good Billy Joel song. It doesn't nearly get the kind of play a lot of his other songs get.

It's one of Joel's more rock 'n roll-sounding songs compared to his usual soft-rock or ballads that he's known for.
There's a track on his 1989 Storm Front album that sounded a lot like "Matter of Trust". It was called "State of Grace". Never became a single, but it was still a pretty good song.

Man, I hated that song for so long until I listened to AT40 from 1986 (September 20) and actually listened to the lyrics. These lyrics are of a genius and also powerful. It makes no difference what others say about you and your relationship with your partner. It is has to be based on trust or you have nothing! Take Dr. Phil's marriage for example, the rumours of divorce are totally fiction. Anyway, listening to this record has been joyful and an enlightening experience.

This song rocks. Love the opening. He had some great songs on this album including the incredible Big Man on Mulberry Street

This is one of my favorites by him. I've never been a big fan of his, and this is more like a Springsteen (or other 80's working class rock) song.
