How come 2 2002 Red Hot Chili Peppers songs "By the Way" and "Zephyr Song" did well on R&R's Modern Rock chart but didn't make the R&R CHR/Pop chart?

"By The Way" was awesome! Definitely one of my favorite Chili Pepper songs but "Zephyr Song" kinda sucks in my opinion. In fact, ZS didn't even come close to #1 on Alternative which for a second single by them is pretty weak. Obviously an RHCP first single is going to be massive there no matter what.
To answer your question about them not charting on Pop. BTW never went for adds. It almost went top 50 on its own but I think if it had gone for adds it would've been at least top 30. The Chilis aren't really band that'll get pop airplay just by having a new song out. ZS did go for adds and peaked just below the top 50 as well but it was too late by that time since the album had really lost a lot of steam. (BTW is probably one of my least favorite albums that I own. It was very disappointing since Californication is one of my favorites.) Plus, ZS really wasn't a great song to make a Pop comeback with in the first place. It did go top 20 on Hot AC though somehow.
Glad they were able to turn things around with Stadium Arcadium.
