Really, don't ask me why this song just tickles all my fancies. Maybe it's the deep vulnerability coming out of Rick's performance amid all the slick, radio-ready production, and the seriously underhanded lyrics. Or maybe it's just the hopeless tragic romantic in me speaking. Now that I think about it, chalk this one up as one of those better left unexplained. Other than that, this is a cover of an original tune by Rick's compatriots Mondo Rock, included on his 1985 album, Tao. It reached #22 on the Hot 100. Here are both versions, just so everyone can compare them. Rick SpringfieldMondo Rock

Eventually, you will run your own underground soft rock station. I find your attachment to this genre so endearing! <3

Definitely one of Springfield's most underrated hits. Unfortunately, by 1985, he was pretty much passe. After "Love Somebody" from the year before, he never had another Top Ten hit. 1981-83 was definitely his heyday.

I liked Tao's tightness as each track blended into the next. For this song, it starts out as a little boy saying "who's there?", then the boy ages into an adult and the start of "State Of The Heart"...classic stuff
Thing is he's still doing his act today and new album in July. I plan to check out a couple of his shows this summer. No, I'm not going on his cruise/performance with John Waite in November. There's less than 20 spots for the cruise. I've seen Rick light fire to guitars, dive into crowds and smash numberous guitars.
Funny thing, during his heyday he didn't destroy stuff just swear on stage.

If you planning on buying the Live Aid DVD, there is no Rick Springfield footage along with "Drive" by The Cars and several others. So truly, this youtube link is something not available for some 23 years. Thank goodness for youtube...
I remember recording some Live Aid segments on cassette recorder. I would place the tape recorder right next to the TV speaker for a recording. Then, you hope no one in the family would say anything while the tape spun.

This and "Honeymoon in Beirut" are grossly underrated in the Springfield catalogue, in my opinion.

It's even more interesting...the youtube link also shows a performance of "Love Somebody" during Live Aid including Joe's (what'shisname) introduction. Now, this was never broadcast in the USA, so the BBC only saw the three minute forty-eight second performance of "Love Somebody".
On his Platinum & Gold Collection CD, it says "Live-Aid, where he performed two songs found on this collection - 'Human Touch' and 'State Of The Heart' - further cemented Rick's growing credibility in the music community."
State Of The Heart is no longer played "in full" at his shows. It is a part of his hits medley with Bop Til You Drop, What Kind Of Fool Am I, Don't Walk Away. "Honeymoon in Beirut" is never played during live shows anymore. In fact, only Rock Of Life is the only song played from that 1988 set. I guess, he trying to stay away from slow songs and he doesn't bring a sax player for "Don't Walk Away".
He has a couple trademark things he does at his shows, smashing roses during "Affair Of The Heart", get the audience to sing "Don't Talk To Strangers" usually a tween and touching as many people as possible during "Human Touch".
The new song just went out on Prime Cuts & RPM "What's Victoria's Secret?" I see the same fate of for this one as other established acts fighting AC airplay Top 20 at best.

^When I saw him, the medley went like this: Bop 'Til You Drop / Celebrate Youth / Calling All Girls / Don't Walk Away / State of the Heart / What Kind of Fool Am I / I Get Excited / Bop 'Til You Drop
My only real disappointment is that he doesn't do any of his 1970s songs anymore. I guess they don't fit with whatever image he's going for, but still, a token performance of "Speak to the Sky" wouldn't have killed him...

For whatever reason, my favorites of his are his lesser hits: this, I Get Excited, and Don't Walk Away
