This bluesy jug band classic, very much a pop song, from 1970 is one of my all-time favorite one-hit-wonders. I don't know how high it went on the charts but I remember it was huge. Can't help cranking the volume whenever I hear it.
The name Mungo Jerry is taken from T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

#3 on the Hot 100.
Great song!! Has a neat false-ending with the sound of a car pulling away, before the song resumes.

Before this song came out, many hits about summer were surf-sounding, or Beach-Boyish in nature.
Then Mungo Jerry came out with this skiffle song about summer, proving that summer songs can still be simple, fun, and catchy, but not always about beaches or surfing.
