A case can definitely be made that this is the greatest track and video she ever did.

It's songs like these that make me really proud to be one of the lucky ones who gets Mariah Carey.

One of the best R&B songs of our times.

Probably THE BEST R&B and Rap collaboration of all time. It went beyond just adding a rap to an R&B song. They flipped an already upcoming classic track in "Shook Ones" from Mobb Deep but she enhanced it into one of the best storyteller tracks known to the music scene. Also this is Mariah's best video hands down. This song and this woman are pure perfection. She bridged the gap between the wavering Pop/R&B stars with the Rap World. Mary J. was always pure hood R&B so she was always accepted. Mulattoes should declare this as their anthem if they know what was good for them.

So good and so slept on. I love the whole sultry, mid-tempo vibe of this album. It deserves far more recognition in her discography.

Yeah, the lyrics are easily among her best, and I agree the video is also among her best. It's one of the few times she just is sexy, as opposed to trying to be sexy.
This is also one of the first tracks where she took her ad-libs to another level by essentially singing new verses.

I can't decide if this is my favourite 'Butterfly' single or not, but it is the track from that era I'm most likely to revisit.

This song is definitely a mood, and it's a song best listened to on head phones as you hear both production elements and vocal arrangement elements you wouldn't hear otherwise.
It's funny because when this was first released it felt so different for her and like I couldn't understand the vocal, but now it all seems so natural and perfect.
I truly love the ad-libs: "Last night I had the strangest dream / It was actually quite symbolic / And I whispered that I loved you / very subtly"

I’ve always wondered why the song was titled “The Roof (Back In Time)” only for the single. 🤔

I’ve always wondered why the song was titled “The Roof (Back In Time)” only for the single. 🤔 I think for identification purposes. I doubt a lot of general consumers would realize it's called "The Roof," whereas the phrase 'back in time' is more easily identified in the song. That would have been important for market research, though I'm not sure the song was even promoted beyond the video.

The moody vibe of this is what I love most from her. Probably my favorite song Mariah song, and easily one of her best videos.
Not mad that it wasn't a big radio hit in the US - because it's never gotten old. It's intoxicating.
I'd love her to do an album with a full orchestra - this could be a dramatic highlight.

I love how the Full Crew remix turns the song into this weird mix of neo-soul and almost New Jack Swing.

Mariah confirmed for the first time in her new Oprah interview that she wrote this about an experience with Derek Jeter.
