Seeing the other Tears for Fears topic made me think about this awesome track from 1985. I think the lyrics, production...virtually everything about this song...is really well done.
Great use in 2001's Donnie Darko, too.

LOL this one broke the string of number one hits in a row, this came close though peaking at number 3. I remember seeing this video take place in a library.

Great use in 2001's Donnie Darko, too. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this topic. I really didn't like the song that much until I saw Donnie Darko.

Great song! A must-have for an 80s music collection. Most radio stations don't play it, after Roland Orzabal says "funny how time flies" at the end of the song, it goes into an upbeat musical postlude.

Great song! A must-have for an 80s music collection. Most radio stations don't play it, after Roland Orzabal says "funny how time flies" at the end of the song, it goes into an upbeat musical postlude. Joe FM used to do that, but not anymore. They also now play a rather chopped-down radio edit of "Shout" (as opposed to the full, uncut song like they used to), which makes me angry. >:(

Four years ago, RJD2 came to DJ at a club here in Portugal. I distinctly remember he started his set with this song. Anyway, if I had to pinpoint Tears For Fears's sound and attitude in one song, this one or "Change" would have been my picks, moreso than "Shout" (which comes close) or "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" (which might be their best remembered song, but also one of the least truly representatives of them). With the exception of New Order or Depeche Mode, they were probably the act which most skillfully combined the mechanical (compliment), spacious, arena-sized sound of the time with intellectual, well-read ambitions. In a way, both in music and image, they were the school nerds who made it by adapting their bookworm sensibilities to the needs of a world for which image and hipness are as important as they come. And they did it without coming off as awkward or contrived. Worse was the fact that after Songs From The Big Chair, whatever they had that was so good started to be lost. Even though The Seeds Of Love had its moments, its excessive Beatlesque obsessions and self-conscious stabs at maturity were a sign of the, um, pretentious blandness that would soon come out of both the Roland Orzabal-only version of Tears For Fears and the pointless reunion of three years ago.

Songs from the Big Chair was one of my favorite albums from the mid-1980s period. I have to agree with this. When TFF were at their best, they combined youthful angst, great and thoughtful lyrics with some progressive electronica and rock. After songs from the Big Chair, they seemed to lose the youthful angst they once had and started a more jazzy (bland) direction. Still, Songs From the Big Chair and The Hurting are two memorable albums for me.

#3 hit from their hugely succesful Songs From The Big Chair album. I prefer this to the two #1s (Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World).
Woman In Chains is my favourite TFF song though. Criminally underrated in the USA, where it stalled at #36.

Tears For Fears are great! I prefer this to "Shout", but not quite as much as "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". Still, one of my favorites by them overall.

I love Tears For Fears' music and this one is no exception. Cheesy video, though; shot in a library. Could've had a better-looking librarian.

34-24-15-11-8-5-3-3-3-8-16-25 was the R&R chart run for this song. Excellent song in my opinion. I liked it better than "Shout."

Was it just my radio station or did everyone back in the day get the extra 50 seconds of Broken (live) after the end of Head Over Heels? That was the jam, IMO
I don't recall ever hearing Broken played prior to Head Over Heels, but definitely heard the 50 second ending all the time on the radio.
