I remember that Rick Dees had a "Titanic Mix" of this song with dialogue from the movie. It was OK. I was surprised it even charted at Top 40.

I thought that the dialogue from the Titanic was part of the song, but apparently, the original is an instrumental. Yeah, I remember how it debuted at 39, and dropped to 40 the following week.

This was the first song played (at #40) when American Top 40 returned to the airwaves in 1998. :)
It's okay.

This was the first song played (at #40) when American Top 40 returned to the airwaves in 1998. :) It's okay. Strangely enough, another instrumental song ("Loving You" by Kenny G, if my mind serves me correctly) kicked off the first AT20 (A/C). But "Fly" by Sugar Ray was the first song played on AT20 Hot AC and that's far from being instrumental.

It's a good song, very surprised this hit the top 40, how many other songs have made the top 40 without lyrics besides Darude "Sandstorm"

Wasn't there a feature on AT 40 a couple of years ago that explained the noted drop-off of instrumentals that have reached the Top 40 by decade?
If memory serves me correct, I believe that there were only five songs (and I think ulij mentioned them) that made it to the top 40 in the 90's, as compared to about 30-40 in the 60's. I'm thinking that "Sandstorm" is the only instrumental that reached (or will reach) the Top 40 this decade.

And yes, I believe there were only 4 or 5 in the '90s. Ryan mentioned that too on AT40 a couple years ago when they played "Sandstorm" as a Rewind.

This was a prettty good instrumental. I really liked the instrumentals from this soundtrack.
That dilagoue mix of it more pop friendly.

FYI: James Horner also did the score for Roger Corman's 1980 horror flick, "Humanoids From The Deep."

It was 1982 for the last consecutive year when instrumentals made the Top 40 charts (although there would be 3 in 1985, there was an instrumental to fail to make the Top 40 in 1983 - "Ewok Celebration" by Meco).
The only other instrumentals to make the R&R Top 40 in the 1990's besides "Southampton" were: "Lily Was Here" by Dave Stewart and Candy Dulfer "Bang Bang" by David Sandborn "Forever in Love" by Kenny G "Children" by Robert Miles "Theme From Mission: Impossible" by Andrew Clayton.
And "Southampton" was on the last Westwood One Casey's Top 40 (then known as "The Top 40 Countdown" since Casey was AWOL for the last 4 weeks as he was getting AM-FM/Premiere/Clear Channel to launch the return of AT40/AT20) then guest hosted by Jeff Wyatt (formerly of "American Dance Traxx" which used to air on WBBM B-96 Saturday Mornings in Chicago) that week, and it was the only Top 40 debut that week!

I was listening to old tapes this weekend and found a CT40 from 1997, and the question submitted was about instrumentals in the 90's. Casey mentioned the then 4 (James Horner had not charted yet).
Edit: Just checked the archives. It was the show for 9/20/97.

^ Yep... while David Sanborn is primarily an instrumental artist, "Bang Bang" contained enough lyrics that it's not classified as such.

There are a few songs from my AT40 listening era that I'd always wondered how the hell they ever made it on the chart. This is one of them. Who played this?
