One of my favorite songs from '97, and my favorite from Counting Crows. Sad, but hauntingly beautiful -- and uplifting in a way.
"And it's one more day up in the canyon And it's one more night in Hollywood It's been so long since I've seen the ocean...
I guess I should..."

Good song. Not my favorite by Counting Crows either, but still quality music. I have a specific memory associated with this song, and now that I think about it, there are a few other Counting Crows songs that I have very specific memories associated with too. This group is very good at imprinting things in my brain.

This is probably my favorite song by the Crows (my least favorite would be the grossly overplayed "Mr. Jones")

"A Long December" is my favorite single from the Crows to date.
Many of Duritz's songs are quite poetic, but compared to their other singles, where Adam shows more desperation, a more gentle aura surrounds him in this song. It is relatively easy to feel those metaphors. Who hasn't felt empty smelling hospitals? Who hasn't seen light attach to a girl? Who hasn't laughed slower during the winter, except maybe on Christmas? Adam is a giver, and this song best displays that.
"Round Here" and "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" are my other close favorites of theirs.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Now that I think about it, the Counting Crows are one of the very few examples where my favorite song by a group was never released as a single. My favorite Crows song by far is "Anna Begins". "A Long December" would rank somewhere in the top 5.

I agree. Many of their best songs have never been singles. "A Murder of One", "Anna Begins", "Goodnight Elizabeth", "St. Robinson In His Cadillac Dream" and "Butterfly In Reverse" are all in my Top 10 for the band. That's half the whole list! :) Sincerely, Noah Eaton

This was a nice comeback song for them, and overall, their second best behind "Round Here". Too bad they pretty much ruined themselves for good last year with that horrid cover song.

I was OBSESSED with this for a few months when it was released. I still like it, but nowhere near as much.
