What ever happened to hot instrumental songs, huh? This 1974 hit by a group of Philly International studio musicians is, in my opinion, one of the best records to come out of the 1970s. The production is incredible and the groove is super hot. That's probably why it hit #1 on both the Hot 100 and the R&B charts. That's also why it was adopted as the theme to TV's "Soul Train." They've got loads of excellent songs (like "Sexy" and "Love Is The Message"), but this is definitely the one that put them on the map. Jamming to it right now!

Thanks for the topic, now I am going to not only play this, I will also add it on to my IPod and play it as an "Urban Gold" song on the Urban playlist later on today! This one is a classic, hugely!!!

Sounds even better today in retrospect, given the influence it has had on pop and R&B in the last 30 years.

You heard this version in selected 1973-1975 Soul Train rerun episodes during the 2006-2007 season's "Best of Soul Train" rerun package that was airing instead of new Soul Train episodes possibly to determine the fate of future Soul Train episode production besides recent years of low ratings possibly by most stations airing late night weekends.

RIP Don Cornelius.
"TSOP" went to #1 on the Hot 100 and Hot Soul Singles chart in April 1974 and is often credited as the first disco song to hit #1 on the Hot 100.

My favorite song right now (hence my avatar), exactly 40 years after topping the HOT 100.

the tv show came on the air 50 years ago in 1971 and though not on anymore the annual Soul Train Awards is on tonight which first aired in 1987. the theme of the tv show was one of the first disco hits to hit #1 .it was probably the first tv theme to reach #1 as well.

At trivia recently they played this during the music round, and I guessed "Soul Train theme" because the theme was TV and movie songs. Lol I didn't get credit for the answer and felt like an idiot for a second because I knew the actual song, but I think I should have still gotten credit.
