The extended version of this 1967 hit is one of the my favorite records from the 1960s. It was the second single from their incredible debut album The Doors. Morrison's performance is eerie and haunting. The record actually flopped in Europe, if I remember corrected; it only hit #49 in the UK and fell off the chart there after one week. In the US, however, it spent three weeks at #1. It's amazing how Morrison still retains such legendary status, even though he died just four years after The Doors' first hit. Here's their Ed Sullivan performance.

One of my favorite 60s songs, too.

LOVE this song... i used to play this all the time when i was 15 cuz that was my 'rock phase'... this song has such a 60s feel to it, its such a cool song in general.
Are there more songs out there that have that whole instrumentation and that very 'hippie' feel... i know there are thousands but do suggest a few... i only know a selected few

Are there any more modern covers of this? I like the song, but it sounds so dated in its original form, and not in a good way, in a 60s-Oldies sounds its age kind of way (perhaps it's blasphemy to say that, but eh. it's true).

I love this. A lot of Morrison's music had a haunting quality. He is another one of those rare performers who just seems to have a sad soul and a melancholy voice that potrays that.

Not my favorite song but it's cool enough. Seems like everyone took a turn doing this song for a while after it became a hit. I like the hit Feliciano remake, as well as the Shirley Bassey one. Will Young's version is decent too.

I've always hated it because of the overplay (my reaction when a song is pushed down my throat is pure and simple hate), but I quite like it now.

I may be in a minority here but I prefer the 2:50 single version.
