This was the song that Celine Dion covered in 1997.
The original peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks in 1976 & #2 CHR/Pop, while Celine made #4 Hot 100 & #7 CHR/Pop in 1997.

"Carmen". Although I bet Eric Cartman would do a pretty good remake. He did a wonderful rendition of Styx's "Come Sail Away".

YUCK! i much prefer Celine's version "Carmen". Although I bet Eric Cartman would do a pretty good remake. He did a wonderful rendition of Styx's "Come Sail Away". i LOVE that song though ;)

Celine Dion did him a favour by improving on this song greatly. I wasn't a fan of the original, but the remake was really good.

i never much liked eric carmen after he left the raspberries (big 1972 hit: go all the way). i suppose this might have been one of his better solo tunes. the melody is a direct lift from the middle movement of rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto.

One of the first radio requests I ever made was back in 1997, after hearing Celine Dion butcher this song over and over finally pissed me off enough to call in. I requested the "real version of this song, not that lame-ass Celine Dion cover." The DJ informed me that it was probably "locked in the music room" and hung up.

Eric Carmen's version is a hell of a lot better than that of Celine's (her Canadian ass had to go up another key on this song----she literally train-wrecked it with WAY too much emotion...sort of [my apologies to any Celine fan that is horribly offended]). I also remembered another song he did 12 years later for the movie "Dirty Dancing" called Make Me Lose Control. To me it sounds kinda Beach Boyish in a way.

I think you're combining your Eric Carmen songs... the "Dirty Dancing" track was "Hungry Eyes". "Make Me Lose Control" (the Beach Boyish one) came out a few months later.

I thought differently. Thanks, mst3k. You're right about that. It was Hungry Eyes. MMLC was from his 1988 album a some six months or so later. I knew I had it mixed up with some late 80s song. I stand corrected.

The only reason I don't dislike this as much as I once did is because I heard the Dion version, so this one gained some ground by comparison. It doesn't thrill me, though. The Raspberries were awesome and I do like a good bit of his other solo tunes, though.

I didn't know the original was sung by him. I grew up hearing Celine's version.

An iconic track, both Eric’s and Celine’s versions.
