It's been 5 years since Norah Jones had her signature song, Don't Know Why which became an unlikely hit that established her as a respected artist and helped push her debut, "Come Away With Me" to selling 20 million worldwide.
The song is just lovely and the emotion conveyed is just so moving. Definitely worth the song of the year award.
Did anyone else love the song as much as I do? :)

There's no topic on this song already???
Anyways, if there is, I probably wrote something similar to this: It's a boring dumb song that got overhyped and didn't deserve the Grammys it got (nor the artist). I hate listening to this song.
And I stand by that.

Probably the closest thing to a popular smooth jazz song in this century. Ugh, I love her.

Timeless. I feel like I'm walking on air when I hear this.

It was something refreshing for the time. I liked how she still had a mellow demeanor when she won all those Grammys.

I like this song a lot. Always did. But can someone please explain to me how it became a hit?
I was only 14 at the time and didn't know the charts like I do now. I just remember VH1 playing the video a bit and then suddenly she was top 10 on Adult Top 40. I just don't understand how this got any mainstream attention. That era seemed dominated by heavy rock and hip hop. This seems so out of place

Having said that, plenty of non-rock and hip-hop songs did well in 2002. “A Thousand Miles” was top 10 for the year. Enrique’s “Hero” was a big hit. Kylie Minogue had a comeback with “Can’t Get You out of My Head.”

Kylie Minogue had a comeback with “Can’t Get You out of My Head.” "Don't Know Why" was the major single from an album that has gone diamond in the US and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. She cleaned up at the Grammy's that year as well. How is that not mainstream success? People knew the song even if it only got to #30 on the Hot 100 and #35 on Pop. Obviously there were other songs that did well outside of rock and hip hop. I just remember there being a significant shift in 2001-ish away from the teen pop era, to heavier rock and more urban music. Those were just styles of music that were doing particularly well at that time. I didn't mean to suggest that Pop was suddenly non-existent. There are always going to be pop songs and they are always going to have mainstream success. All of the songs you mentioned are Pop songs. Their success was nothing out of the ordinary. This song however was completely out of left field. To put it in the same group as those songs is silly to be honest. I can't think of another actual jazz song that was out at that time or one has that has come out since that had any kind of significant radio play. I'm just trying to understand how an unknown jazz singer had so much success with a legitimate jazz song from a debut album. Like, what was the initial marketing campaign here? Did it chart on AAA first? Then they threw it at Hot AC just for the hell of it? Did she perform at an award show or something? How did the ball start rolling on this one?

You keep mentioning airplay, and that was my point; it didn’t receive mainstream airplay. It didn’t even make the top 25 of the Hot 100. It found its audience elsewhere. Also, though, I don’t really consider it a jazz song. I mean yes, it has that influence, but it’s not a purely jazz song. Michael Buble and others have had success with similar music.
