Children we have it right here It's the light in my eyes It's perfection and grace It's the smile on my face
Tonight when I chase the dragon The water will change to cherry wine And the silver will turn to gold Time out of mind
Yep, it's Steely Dan, alright. Their penchant for dark, sarcastic lyrics over a soul/jazz-influenced backdrop of smooth grooves is one that still holds a certain magic even these days. And talk about a double game! For "Time Out Of Mind" certainly contained a very grim subject matter, in the guise of a dealer tricking the junkie into wasting his money on his precious coke, while the musical background certainly buoyed many people into thinking they were listening to the perfect Summer sunset tune. All in all, it encapsulates everything that made Steely Dan an oft intriguing, a number of times brilliant, band. Donald Fagen and Walter Brecker: we hereby salute you!

None of their other stuff ever came close to touching what they achieved in "Deacon Blues," but this is a good song.

My favorite of theirs is "Reelin' in the Years", but I like a lot of their other stuff too, this song included. Very good.
