A redneck anthem and Garth Brooks' biggest hit to date. It spent four weeks at #1 on BB's country chart.
I love it.

A great song. I've not listened to country for a long time, but I still love this song. Yeah, and I love "The Thunder Rolls" as well...

I liked it for a while, but grew tired of it very quickly. Songs like this one can be very enjoyable but they're easily overplayed. This one was so overplayed that I doubt I'd enjoy hearing it now. Perhaps in a few years...
Mark Chesnutt did a version of FILP that some people prefer. I think Chesnutt's actually predated Brooks' by a few days.
I've always felt that Garth Brooks took a lot of hints from an old album cut by Ronnie Milsap that was never released as a single. Misery Loves Company, from 1980's otherwise pathetic 'Milsap Magic' album, was a minor hit on the club circuit. It got a lot of country airplay as an album cut and it's the finest example you're likely to ever hear of this subgenre I call honky-tonk pop.

Perhaps in a few years... Sort of like his song "Two Pina Coladas". That song was pure junk. This was a little better, though.

One of the only country songs I can stand. I agree! I usually don't care for songs like this, but "Friends" is more than just a "tear in mah bear" blusey, hillbilly tune. It's actually catchy and fun. If Garth Brooks hadn't recorded "Friends", it could've easily been a rock song that crossed over to country.
