Seven Mary Three is a band that perks up ears, but the song most note them for is Cumbersome off their debut album, American Standard. The raw vocals of Jason Ross give them a grunge sound, but few realize they escaped the clutches of grunge long ago. Even critics remain largely unaware that this isn't the same band that gave us Cumbersome. Rock Crown, their second album was similar to the excellent American Standard, except that it wasn't, well excellent. It appeared as more of an echo of a fading band.
In desperation, Seven Mary Three made a bold effort to shed their grunge image and sound with Orange Avenue. The result was to alienate what few fans they had left, and gain none in return. Orange Avenue generated nothing in the way of hits, and led to one of the biggest travesties in rock music, the ignorance of a truly excellent album, their fourth, Economy of Sound.
Economy of Sound was everything that Rock Crown and Orange Avenue failed at. Raw energy, straight ahead rock music that at once shed the grunge label, yet infused fresh rock music onto the scene. In one of the most insane moves yet, however, the label released "Wait" to airwaves, the song most like their debut album American Standard. As a result, unless you bought their album or went to see them on tour with Sponge and the Spin Doctors, you likely didn't hear the best music they ever came up with.
I personally, eagerly anticipated their follow-up independent album, Dis/Location. Unfortunately, they could not keep the momentum of Economy of Sound, and although there are some gems on the album, it reminds me of Rock Crown following up American Standard. It's more of a fading echo.
Anyone else remember Seven Mary Three and have a favorite album, different take or opinion on them?
