Probably the best known song for the best-known daughter of the Man in Black. Achieved crossover success in an era where numerous predominantly country acts, such as Ronnie Milsap, the late Eddie Rabbitt, Alabama, and most notably Kenny Rogers did so. Don't think it hit R/R's top 30 on Pop, but flirted with the Top 20 on the Hot 100.

This song indeed did miss R&R's Top 30 and peaked at #21 on BB. Its sales apparently outdid its airplay.
For years, I was wondering what the hell the song was. I'd heard it a few times in the early-mid-80s, but didn't know to listen for key lyrics in the song back then. Then, about fifteen years ago, I heard the song on the Muzak in Hook's Drug store, so for obvious reasons I couldn't listen for key lyrics then. Sometime in the late-90s, I even called a country station during their 80s special to ask what the song was. The only lyrics I could remember was something about the boy, and "The girl said, God I hope he comes back soon". The only song they could come up with was "Nobody" by Sylvia, which this song sounds an awful lot like. I had pretty much given up on trying to figure out what the song was until I was listening to AT20 (AC) in April, 1999 and Casey was giving a story about Johnny Cash. Since AT20 apparently didn't have any Johnny Cash in their library, they went with this song. When Casey was introing the song "Seven Year Ache", I had seen that title many a time but didn't know how it went. Or at least that's what I thought. I recognized its unique guitar intro and realized that it was the song I had been wondering about for about 16 years.
It's a great song. I don't remember it when it was popular in the summer of 1981 but I did hear it occasionally on its recurrent airplay. The last time I remembered hearing it was circa 1984.

Seven Year Ache reached #22 on Billboard not #21

Good song. It was one of many #1 Country hits for her and her sole crossover hit, crossing over to CHR/Pop radio and going Top 10 at Adult Contemporary.

This is probably my favourite Roseanne Cash song. I also really like the remake that Trisha Yearwood did with Roseanne a few years ago.

It's easy to forget how important this song (and album) was in the diversification of country music and blending with pop and rock genres. "Seven Year Ache" and its crossover success made it a lot easier for people like Garth Brooks, Shania Twain and Shawn Colvin to follow in Roseanne's footsteps.
This is an absolute classic.
